It’s been a year since settler inventor Volker Wertich’s busy construction game entered on Steam. For the moment, this will not stop next year: Pioneers of Pagonia will also receive expansions and updates in 2025, as a new roadmap now provides.

Roadmap for a second year of early access

On December 13, 2023, Pioneers of Pagonia was born. After an economic, cooperative and mining update as well as many small quality of life fixes, the fourth major and so far “most important” expansion of the building game, the magic update, was released at the end of November . Last week, Envision Entertainment also released a small winter update. However, it was already clear this summer: the first year will be followed by a second year of early access, as Volker Wertich revealed in an interview with Techoutil at Gamescom. At the time, there was already an overview of upcoming topics, but there was no concrete roadmap yet. Developers are now submitting them.

Probably the most important announcement: with version 1.0 of the game, which is not yet scheduled, there will be a full-fledged narrative campaign that will offer several difficulty levels and will be fully playable in cooperative mode. The campaign story must be written by a recognized fantasy author. We do not yet know which author it is.

On the way to version 1.0, the developers want to focus on two main areas. On the one hand, it is about the general quality of the construction set; Quality of life updates to the economy, combat, and operations remain at the top of the to-do list. And on the other hand, the game content should be even more complete; including additional tutorials, decorative buildings and a map editor. Food and population systems would also need to be completely overhauled; However, details are still pending here.

The price increases with the new year

Unlike previous roadmaps for Pioneers of Pagonia, the developers have not yet put individual content into fixed update packages, so it remains unclear at the moment when and in what order which announcements will be released. artwork. However, the next roadmap update is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2025; A lot will probably have happened by then. The price of the game on Steam is expected to increase from “spring 2025” in order to respond to the constant influx of new content for over a year, according to Envision Entertainment. The Pagonia Pioneers currently cost around 30 euros, but there is still a question mark over the future price.

Developers in a technology interview

In November, the editorial team welcomed Dirk Ringe, CEO of Envision Entertainment, to the Techconseil podcast, who has worked with Siedler founder Volker Wertich for over 30 years and is largely responsible for developing the Very lively independent construction game. In the interview he revealed many details and answered exciting questions about technology:

How did the settler veterans end up developing their own independent development game after the creative break with Ubisoft? How and why did they use their own engine? What hardware is Pioneers of Pagonia developed on? How are actually defined? And what argues for or against the use of ray tracing and upscaling?
