Mafia: The Old Country, developed by Hangar 13, was given a release date roughly circled for summer 2025 at The Game Awards last night, after there was no date given during the announcement from Gamescom in August. Mafia: The Old Country is set in early 20th century Sicily.

Hangar 13 plans to release Mafia: The Old Country in summer 2025, approximately nine years after Mafia III. In the game, the player takes on the role of Enzo Favara, the antihero of what the developers call an “immersive crime drama.” In the new trailer, viewers accompany Favara through his initiation ritual, his acceptance into the mafia, into Don Torrisi’s family – and the resulting consequences. After surviving child labor in Sicily’s sulfur mining industry, Favara now embarks on a murderous vendetta armed with a switchblade and Lupara to build a better life for himself. But what sacrifices must he make to achieve this?

Mafia: The Old Country takes place in Sicily

As the title suggests, Mafia: The Old Country is set in the “old country”, Sicily in the early 1900s, and takes place chronologically before the previously released Mafia games, all of which take place in the United States. Mafia is set in 1930s Illinois during Prohibition, Mafia II in the fictional Empire City of the 1940s and 1950s, and Mafia III in the southern states of the late 1960s.

After being able to play the first chapter in Sicily in Mafia II, the largest island in the Mediterranean, located southwest of Calabria, now occupies the entire setting.

Hangar 13 builds on Unreal Engine 5

Mafia: The Old Country is rendered using Unreal Engine 5, as can be seen on the game’s product page. It’s unclear from previous announcements what technologies and features will be used.

Release for PC and game consoles

Mafia: The Old Country is scheduled for release in summer 2025 on PC via Steam as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game can currently be added to your wishlist on the Steam Store, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Store.
