With its Smart Cockpit, display manufacturer AUO demonstrates the possibilities of current display technology in the automobile of the future. With transparent MicroLED , car roof linings and become digital displays.

AUO and its subsidiary BHTC present new display solutions for cars at CES 2025 in Las Vegas.

Real or virtual starry sky on MicroLED

The “Virtual Sky Canopy”, developed in collaboration with automotive glazier Saint-Gobain Sekurit, is particularly striking because it extends over a large area. A transparent MicroLED display has been integrated into the glass roof of the car. The degree of transparency can be changed so that there is either less transparency for displaying digital content, or more transparency for viewing outward, for example to the real starry sky.

The same principle has been transferred to the side windows. But here AUO is talking about an interactive XR window that combines touch and sensory functions. In combination, glass screens should almost feel like you’re in a 360-degree cinema.

A touch screen with haptic feedback

The Morphing Control Center is designed for the center console. At first glance, the control unit looks like a traditional touchscreen, but certain elements can be raised to create a “three-dimensional physical button”. MicroLED display technology is also used here, which shows its flexibility here.

For example, controlling air conditioning and entertainment systems and even selecting driving mode or manual gear shifting with this control panel are taken into account.

The foldable steering wheel screen

In addition to the digital dashboard, in the AUO vehicle study there is a cockpit screen, called “Foldable Cruise Pilot”, directly behind the steering wheel, which also has a futuristic feel. Depending on your needs, the steering wheel and screen can be folded down in different modes, for example when switching from manual to autonomous driving.

In manual mode, only important parameters such as the speed display would be displayed on a narrow screen. If the driver can sit in standalone mode, the screen will be unfolded to full size, for example to play videos.

Horizon Picture Glass

Horizon Image Glass placed in front of the windshield serves as a dashboard with a panoramic view. Thanks to great transparency, the view to the outside remains largely unobstructed. At the same time, information from a navigation system or safety warnings can be displayed.

Video display innovations

A video explains in more detail how MicroLED displays for vehicles of the future work, summarized under the title “AUO Smart Cockpit 2025”. But pictures of a real implementation would be more exciting, because here too it has only been rendered.
