Qi2 Ready: wireless charging without a magnetic ring sows confusion 0 comments
At CES 2025, “Qi2 Ready”, a new option to support the Qi2 wireless charging standard, was introduced, which, unlike “Qi2 Certified”, does not require a magnetic charging ring on the smartphone and does not require certification. The weakening of the standard could once again sow confusion among buyers.
Qi2 is not very common on Android
If a smartphone or charger currently has the Qi2 certificate, the buyer can be sure that it can not only be charged wirelessly at up to 15 watts, but also that the smartphone is held magnetically on the charger without a cover magnetic is not necessary for this. The magnetic ring known on the iPhone as MagSafe is currently part of Qi2, but so far it is hardly implemented in the devices themselves on Android smartphones – Samsung and Google plan to support it charge in the future.
Qi2 ready: unique magnetic power profile
“Qi2 Ready” will in future do without the magnetic ring, i.e. the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), and will only make wireless charging mandatory with 15 watts – the Extended Power Profile (EPP). ) of Qi2 – and “may have additional functions”. . At first, we don’t know exactly which one. As the Wireless Power Consortium, the organization behind the Qi2 charging standard and certification, explains, there is still a difference between a smartphone with “Qi2 Ready” and an EPP (Extended Power Profile) smartphone that can be charged wirelessly with 15 watts. However, a smartphone with a “Qi2 Ready” magnetic body would offer a “Qi2 user experience”.
If a manufacturer wants to fully support Qi2 in its smartphone, it will also have to support MPP in the future, i.e. optionally activate a magnetic charging ring directly in the smartphone and not just via a case.
Buyers will have to look closely
In the future, this will probably mean that buyers will have to look closely at whether a smartphone is Qi2 compatible or Qi2 certified before purchasing it. Many manufacturers, especially those of cheaper smartphones, will probably use the new option to advertise with Qi2 in the future, even if no magnetic charging ring is integrated.
