Upcoming first-person shooter Forest Reigns is currently attracting attention with cute images of a Paris overrun by plants. The first-person shooter without multiplayer uses a rather colorful post-apocalypse including survival and RPG elements. The development team has roots in the Stalker series.
In Forest Reigns, the forest reigns
In Forest Reigns, the rules of the forest, that’s how the title can be translated into German and that’s what it says. Because a mutated forest has taken over Paris and is creating a “constantly evolving world”, according to the developers. But the forest also becomes the player’s accomplice, for example by providing shelter or helping to eliminate enemies. These can be identified in the gameplay trailer as human opponents or mutated animals.
Interaction with the forest is a central element of the game mechanics. When bombarded, certain plants form a shield of flowers, which allow spores to be directed towards their opponents when bombarded further. Growths on roots become traps and thorny tendrils become hand grenades. The scarce resources of the overgrown city can be used to create and customize weapons and equipment. If you are expecting primitive weapons such as bows and arrows in this setting, you are wrong, as an arsenal of firearms can be seen in the video.
The non-linear story is intended to offer dozens of missions and freedom of choice that influences the journey. With “unique factions” you can compete or cooperate. As the game progresses, the goal is to discover the secrets of the mysterious forest.
No release date for Forest Reigns has been announced yet. The title can already be added to your wishlist on Steam and there is also a website for the game.
Certain expectations, positive and negative
Studio head Ruslan Didenko’s resume is likely to fuel some expectations for Forest Reigns. Before taking the helm of the VG Entertainment studio, he worked, among others, on Stalker: Call of Pripyat and other titles in the successful Stalker series. Some people may still know VG Entertainment by its old name Vostok Games. The studio’s previous titles include survival game Survarium and battle royale shooter Fear the Wolves.
However, both games were only moderately successful, at least considering the many negative reviews in the Steam database. At least in this country, the games are no longer available on Steam. Survarium servers were shut down on May 31, 2022.
