11 Bit Studios: Death Howl, the Soulslike deck builder, announced with a demo 11 comments
Death Howl is a combination of the turn-based strategy, deck-building, and soul genres that deals with themes of heartbreak and pain. The indie game, developed by Danish 3-person studio The Outer Zone, will be released in 2025, but a demo version will be playable starting Monday.
Soul-like deck builder with turn-based combat
With Death Howl, the Copenhagen developer promises a game where sadness meets strategy. The title, marketed by Polish publisher 11 Bit Studios on Steam and GoG, aims to stand out from other deck builders with a “moving story about loss, healing and resilience” on the one hand and an atmospheric concept of type souls on the other hand. .
In Death Howl, players take on the role of Ro, a grieving mother who travels through ethereal realms inspired by Norse mythology in desperate search of her deceased son. Obstructing ghosts must be defeated in turn-based, grid-based combat, which the developer says requires not only tactical precision but also adaptability. Opponent bosses are meant to create additional challenges. Not surprisingly, creating and refining card games is important. Each realm visited offers its own deck types and mechanics designed to expand strategic depth.

In addition to the core gameplay, Death Howl offers an open world to explore, divided into dark biomes such as the “Forest of Howling Shadows” or the “Grasslands of Disappointment”. Each region not only unlocks new maps, but also reveals fragments of Ro’s history piece by piece.
Losing a loved one is universal – an inevitable part of the human experience. We believe our narrative approach will resonate with gamers of all types. We introduced a new approach to the deckbuilding genre, combining it with soul-like exploration and adding compelling lore to leave a lasting impression on all who follow Ro’s journey.
