Ryzen 5 8400F vs 7500F in the test: Cheap AMD CPU for AM5 base on B850 compared to 68 reviews
With the AMD Ryzen 5 8400F there is an AM5 processor for just under 110 euros, it is by far the cheapest solution here. In the test against the top dog AMD Ryzen 5 7500F on a new B850 board, the model shows what it can do and what it can’t. But there aren’t even that many points of that.

AMD showed off new processors at CES 2025. Also included was an AMD Ryzen 5 7400F as a smaller variant of the AMD Ryzen 5 7500F, which held the position of small entry-level processor in the Ryzen 7000 series for AMD socket for over a year. But there is another CPU in the debut that clearly undercuts the price of the 7500F and will probably also debut the new 7400F: the AMD Ryzen 5 8400F. Techconseil took out the wallet, bought such a processor and measured whether it is worth its money.
Der AMD Ryzen 5 8400F vs Ryzen 5 7500f IM Detail
Like all Ryzen 7000, the AMD Ryzen 5 8400F is based on the Zen 4 architecture desktop PC. Ryzen 8000 are APUS under the HeatSprider, that is, solutions that have a stronger graphics unit than the Ryzen 7000 and therefore, for example, for complete PCs without additional DGPU, but especially for laptops. In the office, the best-known representatives AMD Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G (test), which came to the market a year ago.

The remaining ramp of these APUs are F-CPUs, that is, processors with a disabled graphics unit. And at the bottom sits the Ryzen 5 8400F, which is mostly about today.
178 mm² status 71 mm² + 122 mm²
Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 8000 differ in the head of heat. Ryzen 7000 is the classic AMD processor, it consists of several chip locations: one or two processor dies and an I/O-The. Ryzen 8000, on the other hand, is a monolithic chip in which everything in one is united, codenamed Phoenix.
For AMD this is cheaper for AMD despite the slightly better N4 production and the space of 178 mm², because in addition to the calculated smaller chip there is also no elaborate and long packaging, au minus 1 × 71 mm² CCD + 122 mm² iodine. However, there is a ramp remaining in both cases: processors, which failed during binning and are part of the defect, have the last chance to get a cheaper price in the form of the 8400F.
Compared to CPUs, L3 cache APUs are halved and the clock structure is a little different. This follows that the solutions are mainly intended for the notebook (rescue), but have been carried over into the office.
The AMD Ryzen 5 8400F is partly above the Ryzen 5 7500F, but also below – and offers the package at a currently quite unbeatable price. It looks like this in the overview.

In addition to half the L3, only half the number of PCIe lanes
Apart from the basic specifications, there are still two or three points that must be observed. Because Phoenix (Ryzen 8000), for example, does not offer as many PCIe lanes as Raphael (Ryzen 7000): 20 versus 28 are native, of which 16 or 24 lanes can be used effectively.
Only 16 lanes on the AMD Ryzen 5 8400F mean that usually only eight lanes are available for the graphics card slot, the others are used, for example, for M.2. Here the advantage is clear with the Ryzen 7000, there are usually 16 lanes for the graphics card, as well as four lanes according to the PCIe 5.0 standard that can be used for the first M.2 slot. Here, too, Ryzen 8000 can serve with PCIe Gen4.

AMD Ryzen 5 7500F with RTX 4090 offers 16 lanes
Although in many traditional games the difference between PCIe Gen 4 with 16 or 8 lanes is very small, it is available. With a L3 cache reduced in half, which is also important for gaming, comes down somewhat to the theoretical side.
“New” AMDS B850 chipset for entry
Officially, the newest chipset from AMD has also been officially, which has other cheap boards.

The B850 is the new mainstream offshoot. As with the two larger chipsets x870 (Quasi B650E) and x870E (Quasi x670E), there is little new, these were already well known under a new name – with a duty to USB 4.0 on the continuous board.

In contrast to the B650 mainboards, the B850 boards offer not only PCIe 5.0 for an NVME SSD, but also optionally PCIE 5.0 for the graphics card-A B650 or a B650E (with PCIe 5.0 for the graphics card) is responsible for this).

As part of the B850, boards of the 840 class can be found, which are clearly circumcised in their PCIe skills. In contrast to A620, B840 only exists PCIe 4.0 via the CPU and on the chipset itself only PCIE 3.0.
ASUS TUF GAMING B850 plus WiFi MIT PCIe 5.0
In the ASUS TUF Gaming B850 WiFi test model, ASUS relies on the full PCIe 5.0 slot with 16 lanes and once M.2 for PCIe-5.0-SSD, which has four more lanes. With this equipment, the board is significantly upgraded on paper, now almost corresponds to an x870 solution. But only almost.

However, the clear separation follows the connections. Because USB 4.0 also does not donate to the B850 board, which is one of the most expensive models at prices of 257 euros. In the same house there are already x870 boards such as the ASUS Prime complete material on point. But the Prime series is more of the mainstream product, while TUF recently represented “Kleine Rog” to Asus, the focus is different. Ultimately, the inclined customer has to look at exactly what they want and need.
The B850 is not cheap at first in many places, and the equipment is also only partially convincing. In the upper price range it can be used directly to the X870, it must be cheaper, simply the predecessor B650 (E) is used. There’s plenty of choice there, and you’re going for around 100 euros. B850 must ultimately be cheaper to play a role. The editorial team will also be separately dedicated to the topic again.
