Messenger: Signal introduces message synchronization

The Signal Messenger, to which many users have deliberately switched to data protection and privacy, introduces a new function: the safe synchronization of the previous news course when pairing a new device, which is also an accompanying device such as an can.

After pairing, past messages and media are also available

If Signal is installed on a smartphone on or iOS, up to five iPads or desktop PCs can be linked to this Signal app. The entire Signal communication can then also take place via these paired devices.

So far, however, the previous news course has not been transferred to the pairing of new devices. This is exactly what is possible with the new feature. This means that the entire news history and media sent to the newly paired devices from the last 45 days are immediately available. “The entire synchronization process takes place completely encrypted and confidentially without Signal having any insight into the data,” explains Martin Bartenberger, as Roof Manager at Signal responsible for the German-speaking area.

Encrypted archive for transport

According to its own statements, the signal not only took data protection into account when implementing the new functionality, but also paid attention to the highest possible speed of transmission. In order to transfer the data, Signal initiates the creation of an encrypted and compressed archive of all information from the account, which the user’s instructions are then transferred to the new device via the from Signal end to end. -Encrypted end. The signal also has no news preview with this transmission. The signal announces more details in a blog post. As usual, the source code is available as open source at GitHub.

The functionality is gradually deployed

The latest version of the signal is required to use the feature for secure synchronization. The feature is currently still in testing and will be rolled out to all Signals users in the coming weeks.

Selling on Future Signals Backups

The basis of the new feature is a uniform encrypted backup format that the Signal team has been operating on over the past few months. This new encrypted backup format is the groundwork for the next big feature Signal is currently in development, namely the possibility of a safe and encrypted restoration of your own Signal data, for example if your own phone is faulty, explains signal spokesperson Martin Bartenberger.
