Nvidias H20 AI Accelerator: Deepseek could tighten sanctions 45 comments

Deepseek was trained on H800 by NVIDIA, which would now run on Huawei-ascence-910c chips. American President Trump therefore wants to tighten sanctions. First and foremost, the H20 would be affected after the last squeeze when the H800, a derivative of the H100, was put on the line. Does Nvidia have a plan?
So far there are only rumors from the area around the White House, but the question remains with possible adjustments, which sizes are targeted. Until now it was AI performance using a computer formula via theoretical flops (FP8), NVIDIA was able to quickly adapt chips in this area and bring it back to the market.

The crucial size is and until now was the TPP, the total processing performance (page 193 ff.), which must have a value less than 4,800. It applies not only to professional cards, but also to solutions of desktop, that’s why Nvidia is putting a D variant for China. The NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 5090 (test) has a TPP of 6,704, the RTX 5090D for China only 4,750 and in this AI view is almost as fast as the RTX 4090D with 4,707 TPP.
Additionally, with smaller solutions, the performance density, PD (page 60 ff.), which should not exceed a factor of 5.92. This starts many large chips, but also smaller and older solutions, which is why Nvidia had also launched L20 and L2 in addition to larger cards – the L40 exceeded the PD value.

Quick adjustments possible again?
If Nvidia has shown one in recent years, then they are very adaptable. An appropriate solution has recently been met with a tightening of sanctions. In this regard, it would be surprising if Nvidia did not have a “plan D” in the drawer to present another suitable solution after H100, H800 and H20. Because the possible tightening has been discussed in Washington for some time, which will not have passed Nvidia. The auction administration just couldn’t get it going.
Nvidia was calm in an initial statement and explained that Nvidia “stands ready to work with the administration as it pursues its own approach to AI.” This was not yet well received at the stock market moving for Nvidia. After Deepseek Valley’s trip on Monday with a minus of 17%, the amount on Tuesday with an increase of 9%, 4% was reduced on Wednesday.
