According to the end of Sony: Verbatim continues to deliver Blu-ray blanks 31 comments
The message made big waves that Sony will implement the production of Blu-Ray-Rohlingen for end customers from February. Shortly after, the word of interruption spoke in Japan and assured that it will continue to produce optical storage media such as Blu-ray, DVD and CD.
Sony stops blank production
At the end of January, Sony had issued a Japanese press release in which the “production of all media models Blu-Ray-Disc, MiniDiscs for Recording, MD Data for the Recording and MinIDV Cassettes was announced from February 2025” automatic translation. This means blanks for direct sales to customers and not data carriers who need film studios and forces for their works.
Verbatim wants to continue producing
Verbatim only issued a press release a few days later, in which it is assured that Verbatim data and its partner IO will not turn their backs on the Japanese market with optical storage media, like others. Obviously this means Sony. Verbatim data and IO want to continue selling Blu-ray, DVD and CD media in Japan. This should apply even more to the rest of the world, as Verbatim is headquartered in the United States. However, the word of interruption has belonged to Taiwanese storage media manufacturer CMC Magnetics since June 2019.
Verbatim has long positioned itself more broadly to survive in a possible future without an optical storage medium. And so, for example, external hard drives, SSDs and USB sticks have arrived in the company’s portfolio, which now also includes headphones, power supplies and USB hubs.
In addition to the new SSDs and USB sticks, Verbatim’s new presentations at CES 2025 are also a new Blu-ray burner in Slimline format. LG Electronics stopped selling Blu-ray players again in December 2024.
Take streaming and downloads
Blu-ray reached its peak in the mid-2010s, during which Blu-ray was later reached in the United States in 2017. Since then, large streaming providers such as Netflix and Prime Video have taken over, later also Disney + and all other media companies that have had to be reoriented since then.
Digital distribution of video games is also increasing in the form of downloads for PCs and game consoles, physical data carriers are sold less frequently and a visual player is only available for the latest game consoles.
