Civilization 7 started this week in preliminary access on Steam: many users and publishers have already tried the new round strategy. While early gamers have criticized it loudly on Steam, editors have been gracious and consistently given good ratings. Time for an overview.
Good reviews from editorial offices
Civilization 7 wants to do many things differently from its predecessor, the IT base could already live at GamesCom in practice. The positive impressions of the editorial team were also confirmed by other editorial offices at the start of Civ 7: the new round strategy gets good marks with an average of 81 out of 100 points at Metacritic.
Editor’s Rating IGN 7/10 Eurogamer 2/5 PC Gamer 76/100 Gamerant 9/10 Gamestar 82/100 Metacritic 81/100
Still the worst civilian debut so far
But at the same time, this rating reduction is also the worst a regular CIV game has ever received early on, as researched on Gamerant. The worst part of the series so far was the debut of the direct predecessors Civilization 6 and was rated on metacritic with 88 points out of 100.
Earlier pieces always reached reviews in the 90s for the start. The background is less the new mechanics, but rather the still unfinished state of the game, which easily makes assessments in conclusion.
Players with a costly lead are angry
The players were therefore less gracious and extremely angry about expensive preliminary access: around 100 euros had to be spent for the deluxe edition and thus access from February 6. For buyers of the standard version for 70 euros, the round strategy will enter the round strategy from February 11.
With the state of the game on February 6, players who spent more than 30 euros for, among other things, preliminary access, naturally, were clearly less satisfied than the editorial offices: with a flood of negative reviews, buyers of the Deluxe and Founder Edition made it to 130 euros and denounced the game’s unfinished user interface in almost all ratings. As a result, Civilization VII debuted with only 33% positive reviews – and was therefore rated “mostly negatively”, the worst rating on Steam. Developer Firaxis also welcomed the improvement. In the meantime, the ratings have climbed to only 50% negative, so the game is already “balanced” again.
Unfinished, but with potential
Basically, players and publishers share the same tenor: the new Civ sets new accents for diplomacy, war and the age system, but features a confusing and partly frustrating user interface and fewer settings as well as freedoms than in the predecessor.
While the editorial offices see a lot of potential here that can be exploited with patches and adjustments and thus seem to put an eye to pressing the ratings, players see this more in the corner of the eye, as can be seen in many reviews: Preliminary orders Must first digest the unfinished game at full price. Improvements only come later.
