Snapdragon 6 Gen 4: Qualcomm brings more GPU performance to the mid-range 19 comments

With the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4, Qualcomm is releasing a new mid-range processor for smartphones on the market, which is primarily intended to provide around 30% GPU performance for gaming. The buyer of the chips includes Honor, Oppo and Realme which are expected to introduce new smartphones in the coming months.
Qualcomm sums up the performance increases of the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 with a plus of 11% for the CPU (GeekBench 6.2 single core) and 29% for the GPU (Gfxbench aztec ruins), and according to Qualcomm, the chip will work more economically than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 6 (S) Gen 3.

According to the datasheet (PDF), the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 is equipped with a total of eight cores, which is in a top-notch core with 2.3 GHz, three performance cores with 2.2 GHz and four efficiency cores with 1, split 8 GHz. The predecessor of this area was still equipped with four cores of the ARM Cortex-A78 type and cortex-A55 type.
Qualcomm does not address the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 in detail what the processor cores are. The term “kryo” gives nuclei directly from the arm instead of the in-house development “oryon”. Qualcomm likely switched the chip to newer CPU cores than the previous ARM Cortex-A78 and predecessor Cortex-A55.
The graphics unit in the datasheet is also called “Adreno GPU” without details. Performance would have increased by 29%.
Camera and connectivity remain the same
There are no changes in the camera and connectivity areas. The dubbed triple image processor (ISP) “Spectres” is still designed for up to three 16 MP cameras with 30 fps “Zero Shutter LAG” (ZSL), alternatively 32 MP and 16 MP can be combined with two cameras or 16 MP with just One camera, up to 48 MP including ZSL is possible. Without the feature, a single sensor can have a resolution of up to 200 MP. This information corresponds to the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 ISP.
The same applies to the integrated mobile phone modem, which with specified up to 2.9 Gbit / s in the 5G-Down link should correspond to the previously used Snapdragon-X62 modem.
An upgrade for the NPU
Qualcomm then has an upgrade for the NPU. In addition to IN16 and INT8, INT4 can now also be dealt with. A small NPU dedicated exclusively for audio and sensors.
