With the ATI Radeon HD 5830 (test), AMD has completed the internal high-end series of the first DirectX 11-network graphics cards. With a GPU mastered for a little less money, however, it wasn’t all that attractive compared to larger models.
Less computing power with the same memory
Like the larger Radeon HD 5850 and HD 5870 models, the Radeon HD 5830 relied on the RV870-GPU. In the case of the HD 5830, this was reduced to 224 shader units instead of the 288 shader units of the Radeon HD 5850. The lower number of computing units equalized the graphics card at least partially with higher clock frequencies. This resulted in a theoretical computing power of 1,792 Gflops, while the larger model came in at 2,090 Gflops.

The cut in ROPS was considerable, of which only 16 were active instead of the 32 of the Radeon HD 5850. As a result, the pixel filling rate with 12.8 gpix/s was almost halved compared to the 23.2 gpix/s of the Radeon HD 5850. 128 GB/s identical. Lower class in performance
As expected based on the specifications, the Radeon HD 5830 placed a little below the Radeon HD 5850, but well above the Radeon HD 5770. How strong are these differences in the selected resolution and quality settings. Without edge smoothing enabled or anisotropic filtering, it was about 25% ahead of the Radeon HD 5770 and 15% behind the Radeon HD 5850. If edge smoothing and anisotropic filtering were turned on, the image changed. In this case, the Radeon HD 5830 was almost 16-20% faster than the smaller model, but was 25-26% behind the Radeon HD 5850.
At volume, the Radeon HD 5830 was able to leave a good impression at a distance of 15 cm with 44.5 dB (a), while it clearly stood up under load with 53 dB (a) and ranked close to the Radeon HD 5870. The GPU temperatures were in the green with less than 80 ° C. The graphics card, on the other hand, could not convince when it came to performance. In order to enable the high clock rates of the GPU, AMD had to increase the voltage and therefore ensured that the Radeon HD 5830 took more power than the larger and faster brother Radeon HD 5850. For users who wanted to provoke the Radeon HD Radeon 5830 could be expected with about 10% more power using overclocking.
Conclusion
Overall, the Radeon HD 5830 was a successful graphics card, but was overpriced for what was offered. The much faster and more efficient Radeon HD 5850 was only 50 euros more expensive, while the slower Radeon HD 5770 was almost cheaper. The Radeon HD 5830 offered too little performance to justify the price.
