Amazon presented details in New York about the new Alexa with generative AI based on its own Nova-Aai-Aalexa+ model. The new version of the voice assistant, which had been massively delayed due to persistent problems, is not starting in Germany at first, but in the USA – free with Prime.
Alexa + is a complete new development
The entire architecture of the voice assistant had to be redesigned for the new version of Alexa. A mix of old and new Alexa is not possible in the long term, which made the change from the previous Alexa to the AI-Alexa even more contested, because everyone wants to continue using the voice assistant as they were used to the last 10 years. In the US, Alexa+ also starts with a new standard voice that makes it different from the previous Alexa.
Combine information and actions
For example, although generative AI or an AI chat bot is very good at creating a menu, it is not trivial that it also sends a food order or sends appropriate invitations to friends. A chat bot based on a current AI model alone was therefore not a solution for Alexa. AI Alexa must both understand the user and derive actions from them and not just provide information.

AI Alexa is now able to order food reservations or concert tickets, make appropriate calendar entries and order the babysitter. In addition, Alexa can also perform smart home products, with which, for example, the light, coffee and music are slowly navigated. But Alexa+ will also be able to order a suitable Uber remotely from stored dates and locations.
Ai Alexa responds to mood and tone
The new Alexa must always take into account the individual user and what it knows about them, such as their preferences and habits. Alexa+ can also be told proactively, that you don’t like to eat, for example, so that this is taken into account when searching for restaurants in the future.
At the same time, it should also be suitable for any type of entertainment. Alexa can also recognize and take into account the user’s mood and tone. A nervous and excited user will therefore try to calm Alexa +.
Alexa+ can rate camera and documents
If you’re using an Alexa device with a camera, like an Echo Show, the new Alexa+ can also analyze images taken in control. Additionally, you can now share documents such as Docs and PDFs with Alexa+, which can be evaluated and summarized by AI. You can also ask specific questions that Alexa answers based on information in the document.
For children who ask Alexa + about it, the voice assistant can also make up stories and accompany them with AI images as well. Amazon apparently uses a whole abundance of different AI models. Alexa+ claims to have been the largest and most comprehensive integration of services, assistants and LLMs yet. At all times, use the best template for the respective task instead of just using one template.
The cheapest way to implement an AI language assistant is definitely not. In the millions of requests expected to Alexa + daily, relevant costs for the operation of all these models arise.
Alexa + combines Amazon services
When controlling smart home devices and music, you should be able to use normal language in the future instead of having the name of each speaker in your head. For example, saying that music plays everywhere, but the baby should not be woken up, the output is matched to the speakers according to the available information.
Inclusion with the security system
With a music title from a movie, Alexa can also be prompted to skip to the correct movie scene where the title in the movie occurs – provided an appropriate subscription. If you use ring cameras, Alexa shows when someone went out with the dog yesterday, appropriate video recordings from the day before. With Amazon Fresh, food can be ordered both voice controlled and via display of an echo show.
Amazon therefore appears to have addressed the long-standing problem with Alexa+ that the company’s individual services are poorly or not linked at all. At this point, however, they hang – at least in presentation – just fine. The prerequisite is that you use services such as Calendar, Prime Video, Amazon Music, Ring and CO in daily life.
Displayed on an echo show with display
Amazon showed off Alexa+ completely on an echo show at the event, as the new AI version firmly uses on-screen visualization. It remains to be seen how Alexa+ hits on a normal Echo speaker.

FREE for Prime members
Alexa+ costs $19.99 in the US, but is free for Prime members. Prime membership costs 8.99 euros per month in Germany and $14.99 in the United States. The AI-Alexa would be compatible with “almost every” Alexa device that Amazon has sold so far.
When exactly Alexa+ will be available in other countries was not entirely clear at the event. In advance there were also rumors that the start could have moved again. In the United States, the service is to be rolled out starting in March.
Amazon states availability in Germany and other countries: “Alexa+ will initially be available in English for customers: in the United States and gradually rolled out to all countries where Alexa is available today.”
