Phison had presented, and now Silicon Motion is following suit, with the introduction of the Reference Design Kit (RDK) for Fast PCIe 5.0 SSDs with SM8366 controller and up to 128 TB of storage capacity, provided QLC-NAND is used.
Silicon Motion’s Montitan platforms are practically the counterpart to Phison’s Pascari solutions. And as with Phison’s Pascari D205V, Silicon Motion also wants to offer a turnkey reference SSD with 128 TB (122 TB usable) and PCIe 5.0. SMI MONTITAN: Reference Design Kit with PCIe 5.0 and up to 128 TB QLC
The Reference Design Kit (RDK) is intended to enable OEMs and other Silicon Motion business partners to create customized enterprise solutions for data centers. At its heart is the SM8366 controller, which works with PCIe 5.0 X4 and NVME 2.0. Combined with “2TB QLC NAND,” which can only mean BICS8-QLC-NAND from Kioxia and Sandik, the SSD design is expected to achieve 14 GB/s sequential reads and over 3.3 million IOPs during reads. No performance information is provided. The reference design also supports NVME’s flexible data placement (FDP), an optimized data management system that minimizes unnecessary write activity, ultimately increasing durability. This technology combines silicon movement with its own “PerformAshape” technology, which also increases overall performance.
The combination of FDP and PerformAshape™ efficiently manages data, minimizes latency, and maximizes overall performance, particularly in AI data pipelines in multi-tenant environments, including ingestion, preparation, train, and inference stages.

The 128TB SSD RDK is now available for sampling from select partners, concludes Silicon Motion.
Phison recently announced that the Pascari D205V is expected to ship in the early second quarter of 2025. Platforms are also moving at eye level.
