Focus Home announces Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 3. The successful second installment of the brutal action series is quickly getting a sequel. This should build on the strengths of its predecessor, with the developers promising even more spectacle in the form of epic giant battles.
So far, Focus Home has only confirmed the existence of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 3: The publisher is currently working on the game. However, a 16-second trailer only shows a statue in front of a lavish rainstorm and reveals nothing. Details about the game are to follow later, the company writes.
Who is known?
The fact that a sequel is in development is hardly surprising. Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 (review) was a short, crisp action game that knew exactly where its limits lay. At the same time, it was able to deliver the dark bombast and sense of constant threat that distinguish the Warhammer 40K universe. In short: it was exactly the right game at the right time for two neglected niches.
It’s planned. Space Marine 3 is expected to continue the story of its predecessor and also offer “a multiplayer mode.” Focus Home also announces “innovations” and highlights the one thing that made Space Marine 2 special: encounters with huge hordes of hostile aliens are expected to become major battles. Developer Saber Interactive wants to build on its previous experience.
What will become of Space Marine 2?
Space Marine 2 is also to receive regular updates and content in the “coming years.” With this announcement, Focus Home is going beyond the “Year One Battle Plan,” which was limited to one year by name. The title is explicitly to receive an “ambitious roadmap,” designed over several years.
According to the roadmap known so far, the final update for Space Marine 2, with Horde mode, new weapons, a new enemy type, and a PvP game mode, will follow in the spring. The latest “Datavault” update brought a new way to activate skins, a new map, a different difficulty level, new weapons, and PvE missions in February.
This leaves open how Space Marine 3 will be positioned. Despite the announcement, the title is either being removed from completion, the multi-year roadmap is being used as a tool to increase player loyalty, or the multiplayer portion is being merged into a service offering. To achieve this, the idea of the sequel as a “new edition” (DT: “New Edition”).
