Adata pioneered the first SD Express 7.0 with speeds of around 800 MB/s and is now taking it to the next level. According to the , Adata is introducing the industry’s first SD Express 8.0 card. This brings the card’s throughput to double that of up to 1,600 MB/s.

The throughput has doubled

Thanks to the increase from PCIe Gen3 X1 to PCIe Gen3 x2, the maximum data rate doubles from 985 MB/s to 1,969 MB/s. As for theoretical raw data rates, around 800 MB/s or 1,600 MB/s are still clear. The SD Express 8.0 flagpole is far from being reached, as PCIe Gen4 X2 with almost 4 GB/s has already been defined as the maximum for the new generation of PCIe memory cards. For now, the new Adata SD Express 8.0 Premier Extreme Card with 512 GB of space is being developed. The maximum write rate is given as 1,200 MB/s. The previous Extreme SD 7.0 Express card “only” reached 800 MB/s when reading and 700 MB/s when writing.

SD Express nods hesitantly

The SD Express standard, which is expected to eventually inherit SD cards with the UHS interface, is only slowly rolling out. SD Express was already introduced in the SD 7.0 specification in the summer of 2018, and half a year later, MicroSD Express followed, adapting it for more compact memory cards. The first memory cards of this type hit the market in 2022. SD Express 8.0, introduced in 2020, will now be available in 2025.

However, SD Express is now gaining more attention thanks to a new popular feature: Nintendo’s Switch 2 game console will be based on SD Express, which allows game data to be accessed more quickly. Adata also presents the USB stick and SSD enclosure.

At the same time, Adata is introducing the 13-gram UE720 USB stick, which is expected to be available in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB capacities. It is expected to offer USB 3.2 Gen 2 read speeds of 10Gbps, peaking at 550MB/s and write speeds of 450MB/s, offering SATA SSD-level sequential transfer. The USB-A connector can be extended with one hand.

The EC680 enclosure transforms an internal M.2 SSD in the 2280 or 2242 format into an external data carrier with up to 1,050MB/s. The manufacturer claims unassisted installation and broad compatibility for various platforms with a USB-C connection.
