ARM Switches to New Names: Cortex in Smartphones Will Become Lumex 22 Comments in the Future

In the future, ARM wants to rely on names that are more understandable from a company perspective. The new name stipulates that the designated application area can be seen from the name. In smartphones, for example, Cortex becomes Lumex. The numbers are to indicate the generation, and there are gradations such as Ultra or Pro.
The new naming scheme was announced only by CEO René Haas himself, according to the ARM news portal. The future of AI is built on ARM technology, the CEO explained. According to Haas, the industry faces massive challenges in view of AI workloads, as more power must be delivered regularly and under control. ARM Compute Subsystems for Four Market Segments
Unsurprisingly, ARM’s CEO has the absolute right statement for these challenges: “There is simply no other way to design a system-on-chip.” He is referring to ARM Compute Subsystems (CSS) for the company’s four core markets: infrastructure, client, automotive, and AI Edge for IoT. CSS is, so to speak, the overall construction of ARM’s IP solutions for the respective segment, such as CPU and GPU cores and interconnects, but also to support hardware and software partners, in order to translate ARM’s plans into actual products for customers such as MediaTek, Nvidia, or Qualcom.
ARM’s new naming scheme at a glance
The new name scheme now states that in the future the application area can be better recognized based on the name. Current cortex solutions are used, for example, in all areas and not just in mobile solutions for smartphones. Based on additional “AE”, you can see solutions for critical areas such as automotive, but there is a cortex solution. This also applies to areas such as IoT or PC, although ARM does not offer any dedicated designs here.
On the other hand, Neoverse for infrastructure such as server has always been recognized by the independent name. ARM wants to procure in other areas according to this model. The portfolio will be composed as follows:

What is currently a cortex-x925 for a smartphone SOC would be a Lumex with new numbering and another name in the future. With the name change, the numbers should map the respective generation of the platform, while the additives should reflect the performance class. The main core Cortex-X925 should therefore become a Lumex (generation) ultra.
Mali remains the arm for GPUs
There should be no changes for poor people’s GPUs, which will continue to be called Mali, Haas said. Corresponding IP will be referenced as components in the newly named platforms. What this will mean for Immortalis, which has so far been referred to the strongest GPUs with hardware ray tracing, remains open.
After a brief look at the website, however, ARM has not made any changes to the solutions already available on the market, and the new naming scheme is expected to find its way into the next generation, and then potentially retrospectively.
