3DMark Time Spy: Free benchmark at a glance
The 3DMark Benchmark Suite (download), which is essentially free, contains different benchmarks that test different scenarios of a gaming PC. At this point, it’s all about the 3DMark Time Spy test, which checks gaming performance for DirectX 12 under Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Time Spy is now a few years old and is one of the first 3DMark benchmarks based on DirectX 12. As a result, the hardware requirements are low and no modern features are required, so even older graphics cards can perform the test without any problem. Windows 10 or 11 is mandatory for DirectX 12. With 3DMark Steel Nomad, 3DMark Time Spy will receive an official successor in spring 2024, significantly more demanding and requiring faster hardware. Techconseil has now tested over 90 graphics cards in 3DMark Steel Nomad. There are also benchmarks with over 45 graphics cards from 3DMark Speed Way, which test ray tracing performance.
100+ Graphics Cards for 3DMark Time Spy
Techconseil tested over 100 graphics cards in 3DMark Time Spy. In addition to almost all modern models like Nvidia GeForce, AMD Radeon and Intel Arc, various older GeForce and Radeon accelerators are also represented, up to the GeForce GTX 660 and Radeon R7 250X. Note: The following chart does not show the “3DMark Score” as the total value of GPU and CPU performance, but rather the “Graphics Score”, which is also displayed for each benchmark run. It evaluates the performance of the graphics card as detached as possible from the rest of the system.
GeForce RTX 4090 and Radeon RX 7900 XTX benchmark results
In the test, the currently fastest graphics card, the GeForce RTX 4090 (test), showed a graphics score of 31,369 points. The model should be around there in another computer. Depending on the system, the points may be slightly lower or higher – the latter especially with an inherently overclocked custom design like the Asus GeForce RTX 4090 TUF OC (test).
AMD’s flagship Radeon RX 7900 There are two reasons for this: Radeon graphics cards generally perform very well in the Time Spy test and, moreover, the benchmark no longer scales correctly with very fast accelerators. Here it makes more sense to use a current test like Steel Nomad to compare performance.
A review of the current mid-range shows that, in addition to the fastest graphics cards (and Intel Arc), the 3DMark Time Spy in most cases shows gaps between GPUs from AMD and Nvidia, which we find also in many games. With just over 19,000 points, the Radeon RX 7800 XT (test) delivers a result 9% better than the GeForce RTX 4070 (test), which corresponds almost exactly to gaming practice. ) is 8% faster with over 20,500 points. These are very suitable distances.
All results are only a guideline; This is about where your own PC should end up with the same graphics card. If it doesn’t quite work, it may very well be OK if the rest of the computer is slower, for example. However, if the results differ significantly, there is probably a problem with the system. The Techconseil community should then be the right place to go.
3DMark Time Spy ranking will increase over time
Techtip will expand the references over time, in particular new graphics cards will be added everywhere. To keep an overview, the editorial team summarizes all changes made to the article in the form of a history at the bottom of the page.
Here you can get the 3DMark Time Spy and this is how the benchmark works
If you want to carry out the benchmark yourself in order to compare your own PC with the editorial team’s test results, you first need the main 3DMark program (download), which can be downloaded from Techconseil. Alternatively, you can download via Steam (click “Download 3DMark Demo”). Both versions are free.
You must then open the “Benchmarks” tab and select the “Time Spy” test. Then you need to click “Run” and that’s it. The test takes place in 2560 × 1440 pixels (WQHD). A demo starts first, followed automatically by the benchmark. Anyone who purchased the paid Advanced Edition of 3DMark can also opt out of the demo and configure the benchmark to their preference.
Once the benchmark, consisting of two GPU tests and a CPU course, has been completed, the result you are looking for can be found in the “Graphics Score” column. The significantly higher “Time Spy Score” result plays no role in this comparison.

Here are the PC requirements for 3DMark Time Spy
The 3DMark Time Spy is a simple DirectX 12 benchmark, the hardware requirements are low. The required operating system is Windows 10 or Windows 11, and the graphics card simply needs to support DirectX 12 at the software level – this is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 400 or an AMD Radeon HD 7000 (need not to be confused with the current Radeon RX 7000 series!) the case. Other than that, there are no PC requirements to speak of.
Test system: hardware and drivers
The benchmarks for the first iteration of the article were carried out in June 2024; the graphics card drivers used were GeForce 555.85 (Nvidia), Adrenalin 24.5.1 (AMD) and 5534 (Intel). The newest graphics cards are then tested accordingly with the corresponding newest drivers, although experience shows that this has no impact on performance in 3DMark – the drivers have long been fully optimized for the graphics tool. reference.
The test system used (Ryzen 9 7950X3D) also has no influence on 3DMark performance, as it measures the speed of the graphics card in isolation. The processor has no importance for the result (in Time Spy the editorial team therefore uses the graphics partition) and the other components have no importance anyway. Windows 11 is used with HVCI memory protection enabled.
