Micron is launching what it claims to be the fastest and most efficient 60TB SSD on the market. The Micron 6550 ION uses PCIe 5.0 x4 and offers a peak of 12 GB/s or 1.6 million read IOPS. The SSD requires a maximum of 20 watts for this. There are three form factors to choose from.

Micron’s 6550 ION is destined to eclipse the competition

Micron is proud to introduce the new ION SSD 6550 series for data centers, which is the first SSD in the 60TB class to use PCIe 5.0 as an interface and therefore outperforms all competitors in terms of throughput. Using fast TLC-NAND (Micron G8, layer 232) also provides a performance advantage, while the competition relies heavily on .

Competitors in the 60TB (61.44TB) class used for comparison from a ‘s perspective are the Solidigm D5-P5336 with QLC, the Samsung BM1743 with QLC and the SN655 with TLC.

Since they still use for a maximum of 7,500 MB/s, the maximum throughput with Micron is higher. In terms of random playback, there is sometimes a tie with Samsung.

Micron also promises that the mentioned performance values are possible with a maximum power consumption of 20 watts. Even more power can be achieved with 25 watts. Power efficiency is also the best in this SSD category.

Three formats of 30 TB or 60 TB

Micron guarantees broad compatibility by offering the 6550 ION in three formats. In addition to the classic 2.5″/U.2 format with a height of 15 mm, there are the new “EDSFF” such as the short E3.S and the long E1.L.

According to the spec sheet, the form factor plays no role in the performance and features as they are always the same. The Micron 6550 ION is offered with 30.72 TB or 61.44 TB of usable storage. Prices have not been communicated.

But you can expect at least a high four-figure amount. Retailers currently charge just under 8,000 euros for the Solidigm D5-P5336 with 61.44 TB. The Western Digital Ultrastar DC SN655 with 61.44 TB costs just over 10,000 euros. Since companies generally purchase larger quantities, different conditions may apply here.
