New storage solutions are also arriving at Adata. The Mars 970 Storm internal SSD with AiO water cooler and the Mars 970 Blade will be presented at CES 2025. Both are equipped with Silicon Motion’s new SM2508 controller. There are also external SSDs like the compact SE940 with USB4 and the SR800 with a power bank.

Adata’s first SSDs with SM2508 controller

The first SSDs equipped with Silicon Motion’s SM2508 controller have been long awaited. This aims to achieve similar throughputs to the Phison E26, but requires only about half the power thanks to modern 6nm production at TSMC.

Adata will be one of the first buyers. The equips two series with the SM2508. The XPG Mars 970 Storm particularly stands out because it features a small hybrid air/water cooler with two 20mm fans on its M.2 card. The SSD is announced with 14 GB/s read and 12 GB/s write and will likely be the new flagship. Up to 8 TB of storage space is provided.

The Mars 970 Blade doesn’t have a large cooler, but maximum transfer rates are slightly lower at 12 GB/s read and 10 GB/s write. The efficient SM2508 controller also allows use in laptops.

External SSDs

The Adata SE920 was the first external SSD with USB4 and almost 4 GB/s. A successor is now presented, which appears significantly more compact. Adata even calls the new SE940 the most compact USB4 SSD in the industry. However, the exact dimensions are not yet available and at least the also very compact Corsair EX400U should have a say at first glance.

Adata cites sequential transfer rates of up to 4,000 MB/s read and write as well as a maximum storage capacity of 8 TB.

The SR800 half the storage space and half the speed. The external SSD with USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 should read and write with a maximum of 2,000 MB/s and be available up to 4 TB. Here Adata relies on the SM2320 controller.

The special feature of this product is the combination with an external battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh and supporting 15 watt wireless charging or 20 watt wired charging.

The SR820 does without an external battery or USB4, but offers a fingerprint scanner for protected data access and 2,000 MB/s in a compact format. The SC730 is reminiscent of a large USB stick and has both a USB-A port and a USB-C port. A maximum of 600 MB/s should be possible.
