AMD Krackan (Point): Cheaper long-lasting APUs with Zen 5(c), RDNA 3.5 and 50 TOPS

There is still room below Strix Halo and Strix Point, but above the old Ryzen 8000 Mobile Ryzen 200: Krackan (Point) now takes it with AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 and Ryzen AI 5 340. Strix’s constants are still the 50 TOPS powerful NPU for Copilot+, Zen 5(c) and RDNA 3.5. But there are also compromises.

Krackan Point vs. Strix Point/Halo

AMD Strix Point and especially AMD Strix Halo are high-end products, so AMD partner solutions were, are or will be correspondingly expensive. Alternatively, there is the older Ryzen 8000 Mobile “Hawk Point”, which AMD will let live as the Ryzen 200 – but they only offer a 16 TOPS NPU and therefore have no Copilot+ support.

So AMD had to bring more choices to the market, as quickly as possible and at a lower price. This is where Krackan Point comes into play.

Ryzen AI 7 350 and Ryzen AI 5 340 in detail

The first two solutions will debut as the Ryzen AI 7 350 and Ryzen AI 5 340. AMD has not yet revealed what the new looks like, but it is expected to be significantly smaller than the monolithic Strix Point Die at 12 cores (4 × Zen 5 and 8 × Zen 5c) and 16 iGPU CUs. At Krackan Point (KRK) there are probably only 4+4 cores and an 8 CU iGPU.

With Zen 5 and Zen 5c

The AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 relies on four Zen 5 cores plus four Zen 5c cores, the smaller AMD Ryzen AI 5 340 relies on 3+3.

Clock speeds up to 5.0 GHz are almost identical to the Strix Point, but they generally only apply to big cores. AMD did not name the small cores in advance. The cache, on the other hand, is reduced considerably; with Strix Point it is up to 36 MB in size and with KRK it is only a maximum of 24 MB.

iGPU with 8 or only 4 CUs

AMD will also specify the integrated graphics unit in more detail upon request. Titled 860M for the Ryzen AI 7 350 model in the footnotes, this solution relies on 8 CUs. There is a Radeon 840M in the AMD Ryzen AI 5 340, so there are only 4 CUs. Memory support goes up to LPDDR5-8000, which was also recently released for Strix Point.

The opponents of AMD’s newcomers come from Intel and . Both are also moving into the cheaper laptop market, and AMD wants and needs to survive here. According to our own tests, this can succeed; independent reviews will have to prove this in the coming months.

Extremely long operating times

According to AMD, Krackan Point is not only fast and cheap, but with a smaller chip footprint it should also enable even longer runtimes than already possible with Strix Point. AMD Ryzen AI 300 smaller in manufacturer benchmarks
