Since the 6th generation, all Pixel smartphones, with the exception of foldable models, have had a fingerprint sensor in the display. Until now, however, a display was required for its use. With the new Android 16 beta, unlocking is now also possible when the display is off.
This feature was already introduced with the second developer preview of Android 16, but was limited to the Pixel 9 series. This restriction was removed with the third beta, so all Pixel smartphones from the sixth generation onwards can now be unlocked even when the display is off. If the corresponding feature is enabled in the settings, simply place your finger on the point on the screen where the fingerprint sensor is located, and the smartphone is then unlocked.
Android Authority tested the new feature and confirmed that it worked in attempts made on a Pixel 6a and a Pixel 7 Pro. However, this unlocking option is not new to Android; other manufacturers have long supported it in their models.
