About three years after its announcement, and much later than the end of 2022, the next generation of Apple CarPlay is coming, which can control the entire cockpit of the car and all functions. It is now being used at Aston Martin under the name CarPlay Ultra. Nothing can be heard from launch partner .

Apple announced the “Next Generation CarPlay” in the summer of 2022 at WWDC with iOS 16 and therefore promised the first vehicles for the end of the same year. CarPlay was supposed to become the operating system for the entire car, and the first supporters were then listed as Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Nissan, , Lincoln, Audi, Jaguar, Acura, Volvo, Honda, Renault, Infiniti, and Polestar. Then—from all sides—it went quiet for a long time, but a year and a half later, Porsche and Aston Martin unveiled their designs for implementing the new CarPlay. While Porsche continued to be the first to release the new CarPlay, Aston Martin wanted to offer the next-generation CarPlay in the 2024 DB12 Coupé and DB12 Volant, which will cost around €250,000. Last year, Apple unveiled the many design options available to car manufacturers at WWDC.

Aston Martin is the first with CarPlay Ultra

In fact, only Aston Martin has made the launch even more so; Porsche is no longer mentioned in the recent announcement. The rebranding to CarPlay Ultra goes hand in hand with the announcement. The regular car player remains in the car. In addition to the brands mentioned above, Apple will also be bringing Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis to CarPlay Ultra in the future.

Global only in the next 12 months

CarPlay Ultra is expected to be available for new orders at Aston Martin in the US and Canada starting May 15th of this year and will be offered in existing vehicles with the Aston Martin Next Generation Infotainment System in the US and Canada in the coming weeks. The DBX, Vantage, DB12, and Vanquish are detailed. The software update is taking place at the dealership, Apple explained. The global rollout is planned for Aston Martin in the next 12 months. CarPlay Ultra requires an iPhone 12 or newer and iOS 18.5 or later. CarPlay Ultra can control the entire car

With CarPlay Ultra, the solution is no longer primarily designed for multimedia and navigation on the central display, but can act as a complete car operating system from a smartphone and thus also control many vehicle functions such as air conditioning and more. Importantly, CarPlay Ultra can now fully integrate the digital instrument cluster and thus display the speedometer, fuel consumption and range, assistance systems, and more. Techastuce explained the architecture behind CarPlay Ultra last year.
