What to do if the urge for craftsmanship takes over? The inclined user buys the ROG handheld and upgrades it. This was also done by Techastuce user Assassinwarlord: not only did he miss an upgrade to RAM and battery, but also repaired the defective card reader.

Player elements with instructions

In his player article, Assassinwarlord takes the readers along and shows step by step what needs to be changed so that the existing RAM can be increased from 16 GB to 32 GB.

DAS upgrade

According to Assassinwarlord, the prospect receives the required RAM from the Chinese online retailer AliExpress, in which the four K3KL90CM-MGCT memory chips from Samsung are available without difficulty. The existing RAM was carefully removed using the bottom fire and a hot air dryer in order to then solder the new modules. At this point, the handheld was started for the first time to perform a function test. The BIOS chip was then removed and the latest ASUS BIOS version including APCB SPD files from GitHub user 95Jake (download on github).

The clock of the new modules can also be increased from 6400 Mt/s to 7500 MT/s using the smokeless tools (download on github), which is beneficial for the integrated Radeon GPU. Since this is a modified BIOS system, the corresponding automatic update function of the ASUS software must be disabled, otherwise it is possible that this version will be overwritten by a newer one. This in turn would be full access to the 32 GB.

Is there a speed boost?

Only a very low one, as shown in the Unigine Superposition Benchmark. However, it is much more important for Assassinwarlord that the following charger combinations decreased while playing. With the 8GB firmly reserved for the Z1’s Radeon, it’s more of a smooth, nicer gaming feeling and less of an overall FPS boost.

Other measures

Another measure was a battery upgrade, which now guarantees three hours of gameplay in Cyberpunk 2077 or lets you run for nine hours on YouTube. The rest of the work, however, was small things. For example, a 90 degree adapter was used for the SSD, which allows the installation of a full-length 80mm SSD, including a cooler. This not only allows more storage capacity than with the regular 30mm variant, but is also cheaper. And especially in today’s world, memory is huge. Old games like V need more than 90 GB of storage space. 2023’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – not the 2017 remaster – takes up 170 GB. Every free gigabyte is welcome.

Repairs

Also due was replacement of the Cirrus logic sound chip, which only spits silently on one audio channel, and repair of the microSD card reader.
