Asustor is launching the second generation of its Flashstor NAS series, which relies exclusively on M.2 SSDs as storage and is therefore both compact in size and can run quickly and quietly. Asustor has really improved the technology compared to its predecessors.

M.2 slots with PCIe 4.0

With the Flashstor 6 Gen2 and the Flashstor 12 Pro Gen2 (FS6812X), there are models for six and twelve M.2 SSDs. The slots are now designed for , although there are differences between the models due to the available lanes. In the Flashstor 6 Gen2, six SSDs are supported with PCIe 4.0, while in the Flashstor 12 Pro Gen2, eight of the twelve M.2 slots support NVMe SSDs with PCIe 4.0, while the remaining four M.2 slots are supported as PCIe. 3.0 are designed.

Switch from Intel Celeron to AMD Ryzen

Compared to the Asustor Flashstor 6 FS6706T (test), the Flashstor 6 Gen2 with the name FS6806X now uses a 6nm production AMD Ryzen Embedded V3C14 processor, which replaces the Intel Celeron N5105 of its predecessor. As a result of this change, the NAS also lose their HDMI output because the Ryzen embedded processors do not have an integrated GPU.

High-end connections

But the other changes are also important. The new NAS systems offer 8 or 16 GB of DDR5 RAM with ECC, i.e. error correction in the RAM, which can be expanded up to 64 GB, and have two UBS 4 ports with speed up to 40 Gbps, which can also be used with Thunderbolt accessories. The three integrated USB 3 ports offer up to 10 Gbps.

10 GbE with SMB-Multichannel

The Asustor Flashstor 6 Gen2 has one fast 10 Gigabit network port, while the Flashstor 12 Pro Gen2 has two, the speed of which can be aggregated up to 20 Gbps. SMB multichannel is also supported. With SMB multichannel, all available network connections between the and client are used to increase file transfer performance. This has the particular advantage that even a single client can transfer faster to the NAS, while link aggregation cannot speed up a single transfer from a single client. Asustor quotes transfer rates of up to 1,179 MB/s / 1,181 MB/s for the smallest NAS and up to 2,331 MB/s / 2,358 MB/s with SMB multi-channel for the FS6812X.

In conjunction with the Xpanstor 4 USB expansion device, the Flashstor Gen2 series can also be used with conventional for more cost-effective storage expansion.
