Best of Boomer Shooters 4 is the latest offering from Humble Bundle. The fourth edition of the bundle once again brings together fast-paced classic shooters. The name is a double whammy: the are based on genre representatives from the 1990s, from the “boomer generation” and the “boomer” generation—they’re all about high-speed, non-stop action.

Games at a Glance

The bundle doesn’t feature the biggest names, but they’re definitely remakes. Sam Sam: Siberian Mayhem is still the most well-known. The fast-paced, non-stop action with 3D graphics is coming to , and players are rating it “very positive.” Forgive Me, Father 2 is more oriented toward the look of 1990s shooters. Here, Lovecraftian horror is combined with fast-paced gameplay, something that also works well in the second installment of the series.

Turbo Overkill bridges the gap between old school and modern. Developer Trigger Happy Interactive combines elements of modern shooters, including wall runs and double jumps, with extremely fast-paced gameplay and a protagonist who can conjure up loose lyrics from a 1990s-style Western pocket. This creates an extremely compelling blend within the cyberpunk framework. Humble Bundle has three compelling reasons why you should buy the €15 bundle.

The rest of the titles are rather special and fill the gaps. NECROMUNDA: The Hired Gun blends the Warhammer 40K setting with elements of Doom and Red. However, it doesn’t work as well as the original, and it gets stuck in some places. DeadLink, the next cyberpunk shooter in the bundle, improves on it, critics say, but is rather unknown. Graven, on the other hand, is based on witches, thus connecting the shooter genre to a medieval wizarding setting, but can’t quite match the classics. The assets here are merely “balanced.”

The latest in the bundles, in turn, has a fun factor, but still not for everyone: PowerSlave, unearthed, is a modernized version of a real 1990s shooter based on the KEX engine, with all the strengths and weaknesses of a 30-year-old video game.
