We are still waiting for the first SSDs equipped with Silicon Motion’s SM2508 controller. At least the first product announcements will be made at CES 2025 (topic), including the Biwin Black Opal X570 Pro. The SSD is expected to appear in March, which is also likely for other models equipped with the SM2508.

While SSDs equipped with SM2508 controllers have already arrived in stores in China, it will still be a few months before the Western world is served. Specifically, Tom’s Hardware wants to know March 2025 of Biwin as the market launch date.

The Biwin Black Opal Since the SM2508 would require about half as much power as Phison’s E26, the cooling requirements are potentially lower.

At its peak, the series is expected to read at 14 GB/s and write at 13 GB/s, as well as achieve 2 million read IOPS and 1.6 million write IOPS with random accesses ( random) . These values apply to models with 2 TB and 4 TB of storage space; the entry-level model with 1TB is slightly slower.

According to the datasheet, all models are equipped with “Premium TLC” and a DRAM cache on one side. At least Micron’s 232-layer TLC NAND memory is currently in use. It is therefore not yet the latest generation Micron G9 with 276 layers.

SM2508 also starts at Adata

Adata also recently introduced its first SSDs equipped with SM2508 controllers. The Mars 970 Storm particularly stands out because it features a small hybrid air/water cooler with two 20mm fans on its M.2 card. The Mars 970 Blade doesn’t have a large cooler, but maximum transfer rates are slightly lower at 12 GB/s read and 10 GB/s write.

Phison continues with E28

Since Silicon Motion took a long time to develop the SM2508, Phison was even able to prepare a successor to the E26. Like the SM2508, the E28 presented at CES uses a thinner 6nm manufacturing process for greater efficiency. It is said to run even faster than the E26 and will therefore also beat the SM2508. However, the E28 is unlikely to hit dealerships anytime soon.
