CB Funk Podcast #97: Gaming Year 2024, from AAA(A) flops to AA/indie gems 8 comments
In the last CB Funk episode of the year, Max and Fabian look back at games released in 2024 – with many lows in the AAA(A) segment and even more highs in AA titles and indie games, according to them both . At the end, and again and again in the podcast, there are personal game reports and then perspectives.
CB Radio: the ninety-seventh episode
After a busy gaming year in 2023, in which the number of top-notch blockbuster games in the AAA segment and their ratings likely set a new record, the hot gaming industry has calmed down in 2024 At least that’s what we can see. These large-scale productions might suggest that not only have there been far fewer this year, but the quality and reception have also deteriorated. This was already predictable in January and was therefore not necessarily a surprise, but it left a free place for AA games and equally innovative independent games, which were thought to be almost dead after the gradual consolidation of the industry and dozens of buyouts in recent years. .
And the vast majority of the year’s surprise hits and blockbuster hits come precisely from these categories, as Max and Fabian judge with the still-young video game history of 2024 in mind. A few blockbusters from major publishers have reached the top of the ranking. favored by critics and players alike, but they largely fall into at least one of the two categories that the two podcast players identify as gaming’s recipe for success in 2024.
But who was looking for great new games on PC outside of the void filled by PlayStation titles from previous years – because they already played in the previous year’s catalog? – in 2024, he finds what he was looking for mainly in numerous AA and independent hits spread out over the months. However, with AAA cars no longer able to innovate due to massive and ever-increasing costs, the conclusion has become clear that even the safest bet with proven gameplay can no longer protect against total failure, such is the verdict.
Max and Fabian therefore have a lot to discuss in the podcast, but always find time for their own gaming highlights and a personal conclusion. At the end there are also prospects for the coming year – and at this point Max cannot resist a controversial thesis. We hope you enjoy listening!
