Charging port below: Apple reportedly planning a new Magic Mouse after 15 years 97 comments

Apple’s Magic Mouse gained some notoriety because its charging port is placed at the bottom. Charging and using it at the same time is therefore impossible. After 15 years, Apple is reportedly planning a new design for the wireless mouse that could also eliminate this design flaw.
Apple’s worst design failure is alive
Since it went on sale, it has been the epitome of poor product design, the likes of which we’ve never heard from Apple – even if the power button on the bottom of the Mac mini with M4 (review) recently sparked controversy again. After the Magic Mouse was initially sold with a Lightning port on the bottom for charging, the update to USB-C as a charging port has not changed its position. A fundamentally new model is now intended to address the Magic Mouse’s biggest criticisms and better adapt to current times.

What about ergonomics in the future?
In addition to the position of the charging port, the ergonomics – non-existent – is also one of the biggest criticisms leveled at the Magic Mouse. No matter how you hold it, it still feels uncomfortable after prolonged use. Apple has sacrificed ergonomics and everyday usability in the form of the charging port located at the bottom of a particularly flat shape. There’s simply no room for a USB-C port on the front in the current design. Both could be easily changed if, for example, Apple used a design like the Logitech MX Master 3S (review), which is considered by many users to be a very good office mouse.
Launch still at least 1 year away
According to the latest rumors from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, it will take around 12 to 18 months for Apple’s Magic Mouse to offer both ergonomics and charging while in use. A market launch in 2026 is likely. Since other details are completely missing so far, the new Magic Mouse is definitely not in the starting blocks yet.
