Asus announced ten new AM5 motherboards based on the B850 and B840 classes at CES 2025. They are intended to complete the range of cards for AMD 9000, 8000G and 7000 below the X870E and X870. Everything from Mini-ITX to ATX is included. Prices are between 209 and 439 euros. They will be available in stores from January 13.

X870E vs. X870 vs. B850 vs. B840

Since the end of September 2024, new AM5 800 series motherboards have appeared, although their X870E and X870 chipsets with their capability for graphics cards and SSDs are old acquaintances (details: E in comparison). What’s new is the requirement to offer USB 4 and the partners have also improved the designs elsewhere – for example with Full HD BIOS, WiFi 7, more USB ports or M.2 slots. But the core of the chipsets is familiar.

This also applies to the cheaper motherboards of the B850 and B840 classes that are now hitting the market.

Unlike B650 motherboards, B850 boards not only always offer PCIe 5.0 for an NVMe SSD, but also optionally PCIe 5.0 for the graphics card – either a B650 or a B650E (with PCIe 5.0 for the graphics card) is responsible for this .

The B850 includes 840-class cards that are significantly limited in PCIe capabilities. Unlike the A620, the B840 only has PCIe 4.0 through the CPU and only PCIe 3.0 on the chipset itself.

For anyone looking to build a very affordable and efficient PC – perhaps based on a processor with powerful integrated graphics capabilities – ASUS B840 motherboards are a cost-effective choice. The first ASUS B840 motherboards all come from the proven Prime family.

Ten motherboards in three series

Asus is showing ten cards in the two new B800 classes at CES 2025: seven B850 cards and three B840 cards.

Anyone who relies on microATX will find what they’re looking for in the TUF gaming series: two Asus boards in the B850 class use this format.

The three B840 cards are also available in ATX format and twice in microATX format. In the absence of PCIe 5.0 and even 4.0, especially in gaming, they should only be considered by customers who are not using a graphics card with only eight PCIe lanes and little VRAM – otherwise the bandwidth reduced on the PCIe slot can become very resulting in a significant loss of performance.
