In a brief update, Codemasters announced that development of EA Sports WRC has been discontinued and that no successor is being developed. For the foreseeable future, WRC was Codemasters’ last rally game. With the final month of “Hard AM Limit” content, EA Sports WRC received its final update.
Lack of Success: Reason for Ending
Codemasters has been developing rally games since 1998. Colin McRae Rally was launched at that time. Since then, four other Colin McRae Rally series and two dirt series have been added. Dirt then continued as a standalone, less realistic game with a festival theme, like Forza Horizon. The other three parts: Dirt 3, Dirt 4, and Dirt 5 were released until 2020. First, in 2015 with Dirt Rally and four years later with Dirt Rally 2.0, more realistic titles followed. After Electronic Arts took over developer and publisher Codemasters in 2021, EA Sports WRC, a new rally game from Codemasters, was released on November 2, 2023, which was able to rely on the official WRC (World Rally Championship) license. The game relied, unlike the F1 games, on the Unreal 4 engine. Since its release, three DLCs and an expansion bundle have been released for the 2024 season. Only about 60% of players could give the game a positive review on the Steam store.
