Framework, the inventors of the modular notebook. In addition to the new laptops, a desktop system was revealed for the first time. The frame desktop is stocked with the strongest APU Strix Halo aka Ryzen Ai Max. This shouldn’t just be for gamers. Small servers are even possible in the network.
This is the framework office
The Framework desktop is practically a portable mini-PC. Inside the 4.5 liter case with a handle, a main board in the mini-ITX form factor on which AMD Strix Halo sits, this “monster” -APU with the most powerful graphics unit of all time. This should make the small computer suitable for countless tasks, including gaming, AI applications or graphics programs.

In cooperation with Cooler Master and Noctua, the cooling solution was developed, which is supposed to act quietly even under permanent load with the TDP of 120 watts. The 120mm fan comes from Cooler Master or Noctua. The power supply takes place via a Flex ATX power supply from FSP, which has been specially adapted and should also operate as quietly as possible.
According to the external connections, there are two times USB4, DisplayPort, HDMI, 5G Ethernet and an audio output. WiFi 7 is possible. The main board offers, among other things, two M.2 slots, a PCIe 4.0 X4 slot and classic fan connections.
The front of the Framework desk can be individually designed with tiles and with the side part there is a choice between a closed variant or a viewing window.
Modular does not work with RAM
The executive had to admit that the basic idea of this PC doesn’t quite work. As is known, STRIX HALO is only available with soldered LPDDR5X memory, which therefore does not change or upgrade. This guarantees a high throughput of 256 GB/s.

AI on the desktop rather than in the cloud
The integrated GPU can also be used for AI applications, benefiting them. From a Framework perspective, AI should not be usable in the cloud, but on its own desktop PC so that user data stays where it is.
For example, Metas Llama 3.3 70b can run on the Framework desktop in real time. The open source community should be supported by this product.

For LLMs, in which even 128 GB is not enough, several framework desktops can also be connected to simulate a small “supercomputer“.

Variants, prices and availability
The Framework desktop is offered in three configurations. The Ryzen AI Max 385 with 8 CPU cores, Radeon 8050s and only 32 GB LPDDR5X for 1,099 takes place. The Ryzen AI Max 395+ with 16 full cores and Radeon 8060 is available from $1,599 with 64 GB or in the max version with 128 GB for $1,999.
Even the most expensive runtime is still cheaper than AI desktops like AppleStudio Mac or Nvidias Digits.
The market launch is scheduled for the third quarter of 2025, so there are still a few months to wait. The Framework desktop can already be configured on the manufacturer’s US pages and pre-ordered with a $100 discount.
