Kingston is preparing to launch its first PCIE 5.0 SSD for consumers. The Kingston Fury Renegade G5 SSD doesn’t use a controller, but the SM2508 from Silicon Motion. The 4 TB model operates at 14.8 GB/s and 14 GB/s write speeds, already at the interface’s limit.

The upcoming Kingston Fury Renegade G5 follows in the footsteps of the previous Fury Renegade SSD, which still uses a Phison and controller and is identical to the Kingston KC3000 (review). Kingston hadn’t jumped on the bandwagon of the first PCIe 5.0 SSD with the Phison E26. Now, there’s an alternative controller with similar throughput, the SM2508, but with lower power consumption.

Data on available indicates that the Kingston Fury Renegade G5 will be released with storage capacities of 1,024 GB, 2,048 GB, and 4,096 GB. The smaller variant is expected to read at 14,200 MB/s and write at 11,000 MB/s. 14,700/14,000 MB/s are for the 2 TB version, and the 4 TB model achieves the stated peak values. Total bytes written (TBW) are 1,000 TB, 2,000 TB, and 4,000 TB, which is identical to its predecessor. Kingston Fury Renegade G5 Specifications

The Fury Renegade G5 is expected to deliver 6.6 to 7.1 watts of performance in its promised read performance. However, the maximum of 9.5 watts is significantly higher in the 4 TB model. Nevertheless, SSDs with SM2508 require significantly less power than their Phison E26 counterparts.

As Hard Zone reports, a document calls for April 14, 2025, for market launch. Official performance with more details and recommendations should be forthcoming soon.

More SSDs with SM2508 controllers in the starting blocks

The Kingston Fury Renegade G5 will be one of the first SSDs with SM2508 controllers to reach the Western market. Additionally, the Adata Mars 970 Storm and Mars 970 blades, as well as the Biwin Black Opal X570 Pro, are expected to follow soon.
