On the desktop it is initially only the new top model GeForce RTX 5090, which has more graphics memory with 32 GB instead of 24. As for the RTX 5000 laptop GPUs, this concerns almost all models: GeForce RTX 5090, 5080 and 5070 Ti laptop GPUs have 24, 16 or 12 GB of GDDR7 from “VRAM”. The GPU of the RTX 5070 laptop remains at 8GB.

Laptop GPU = Desktop GPU – One Class
The basic principle also applies to this generation: GPUs in mobile laptops use the platform of the smaller desktop variant of the same name. That is, GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU is based on GeForce RTX 5080, RTX 5080 Laptop GPU is based on RTX 5070 Ti, and GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU is based on the RTX 5070.

The RTX 5070 laptop GPU already appears to be based on the GB206 GPU, which will likely follow later on the desktop with the RTX 5060 (Ti).

However, the same chip doesn’t mean the mobile and desktop versions are the same. There are differences in active shaders, clock speeds and TDP – and at the high end, with the GeForce RTX 5090 laptop GPU, also in memory expansion. When it comes to the feature set, everything is the same: DLSS 4 is also available in the notebook.

GeForce RTX 5090 laptop GPU in detail
With the GeForce RTX 5090 laptop GPU, which uses the GB203 chip of the GeForce RTX 5080 in the desktop with a 256-bit wide interface, Nvidia makes the upgrade to 24 GB possible using GDDR7 chips with a capacity of 3 Go by chip for the first time. With eight 32-bit chips on a 256-bit interface, that’s 24 GB. It’s the only model in the RTX 5000 series (desktop and laptop) to go this route. Interestingly, in this case, Nvidia is also unlocking three 9th generation NVENC encoders on the GB203. This is also reserved for the RTX 5090 on desktop, but is obviously not due to the GPU.

The GeForce RTX 5080 laptop GPU also uses the GB203 GPU, but here, as in the desktop, the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, which is also based on it, uses the well-known 2 GB chips. This means that the RTX 5080 laptop GPU offers 16 GB, which is also an increase over the GeForce RTX 4080 laptop GPU with 12 GB.
GeForce RTX 5070 (Ti) laptop GPU in detail
The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti laptop GPU is like the GeForce RTX 5080 laptop GPU: it is based 1:1 on the platform of the next smaller desktop variant: the GB205 with 192 bits and 2 GB chips, as this will be in the desktop with the GeForce RTX 5070. This model offers 12 GB, the GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU offered 8 Go. The RTX 5070 notebook GPU is the only one that remains at the same level as its predecessor.
Key technical data at a glance
The following table contains the most important technical data of the three new notebook GPUs, as they are known to date. This is noticeable: As in the desktop (with the exception of the RTX 5090 with GB202, which is not available in the notebook), the increase in computing units compared to its predecessor is not particularly significant, the RTX 5070 notebook GPU and the RTX 4070 notebook GPU are even at the same level.
What has remained the same is the maximum TDP of 150 watts plus a maximum of 25 watts of the CPU budget (Dynamic Boost) in the two high-end models, which makes it easier for OEMs to use the new generation in older designs. The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti laptop GPU resides in the well-known class below: with a maximum of 115 watts TDP plus 25 watts via Dynamic Boost.
The three larger models use the same card design, while the RTX 5070 laptop GPU uses a smaller configuration. This is also seen in the TDP: 50 to 100 watts (plus 25 watts) are lower than a previous generation – which, however, often failed to achieve its 115 + 25 watts.

Release date
GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 5080 Laptop GPU, and 5070 Ti Laptop GPU released in March. This was already indicated yesterday when Intel announced the corresponding Core Ultra 200HX for the end of the first quarter.
Laptops with the GeForce RTX 5070 laptop GPU will appear a month later. Nvidia didn’t say a word about the even smaller GeForce RTX 5000 laptop GPUs at CES 2025.
