Crytek announced that the Frankfurt developer studio has dismissed 15% of its 400 employees, i.e. 60 employees, and that work on Crysis 4 has already been stopped in the third quarter of 2024. The game is no longer being worked on, the focus is on HUNT: Showdown 1896 and The CryEngine.
Leastings and the end for Crysis 4
Crytek employees affected by austerity measures, who are now losing their jobs, are set to receive severance payments, according to the developer. Although the development of Crysis 4 was already halted in the third quarter of 2024, the developer studio has only now announced this. Developers who worked on the fourth game in the hit shooter series were reportedly reassigned to Hunt: Showdown in 1896 last year. The first-person shooter Hunt: Showdown, which originally appeared in 2019, was transferred to the current CryEngine 5.11 by Crytek in August 2024. Last year, the game not only received a significantly better graphics, but also a new name: Hunt: Showdown 1896 (test).
Focus on the hunt: the showdown
In order to remain financially sustainable, shedding 60 employees is essential, explains Crytek in a contribution to X. Efforts to reduce costs and operating expenses would not have been enough, although Hunt: Showdown 1896 was successful. The Frankfurt development studio will now also focus on this game and provide further improvements and new content. As a live service title, the game along with the sale of new content within the game itself continually generates revenue for Crytek.
For the moment, no next-gen shooters from Germany
Crysis 4 was announced in 2022. At that time, Crytek promised a “real sequel gene shooter.” It is not for nothing that the company became famous with its in-house Graphicnegine CryEngine, since the first part of the Crysis series in particular set the standards. “Can he run Crysis?” Whether the high demands on hardware in the gaming world have been established has been established, but there will be none.
CryenGine License
In addition to Hunt: Showdown, the licensing of IN-House CryEngine will also be promoted to other developer studios. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (Benchmarks) is one of the few games that used the CryengeNine 5 for the last time.
