Govee Gaming Pixel Light in the test: Pixel Art Graphic via AI-Chatbot on the 32×32 display Leave 57 comments
With Govee Gaming Pixel Light, animated content, drawings or Ai-Werke can be brought to an LED display with Pixel art graphics and 8-bit retro sound. As the test illustrates, the user is mainly asked to constantly fill the fun gadget with life.

With the gaming pixel game for gamers, Govee presented an LED display for Pixel Art Graphics for CES 2025, which not only revives retro games, but also gives the user the opportunity to put all imaginable content as pixel art to the LED display by being translated by text or language commands into images and light. This is the first AI-controlled smart pixel light in the industry. Techtip has the game pixel quadratic light Govee with a size of 18.5 × 15 cm and 32 × 32 pixels (1,024 pixels) in the test.
In addition to this model, there is also a rectangular model with a size of 26.6 × 15 cm and 1664 pixels (52 × 32 pixels). The square gaming pixel light (H6630) costs 99.99 euros *, the slightly larger rectangular gaming pixel light (H6631), however, costs 129.99 euros. *
Design and assembly of pixel lights
The Pixel Light’s design is meant to be aimed at gamers, so the housing features corners and edges, as well as lettering such as “game” and “charging.” What can be integrated into game description tables on YouTube and fits the color gaming periphery looks a little out of place on normal desks. It’s not simple and discreet, which is why it won’t appeal to everyone. The Govee Pixel Light includes both a stand for setting up the display and a bracket for wall mounting. Neither bracket is angle-adjustable.

Real-time information, GIFs, and animations
In addition to self-created AI content, the Pixel Light can also reproduce many other graphics and content. Once you’ve configured the display in the Govee app and connected to the internet via Wi-Fi, real-time weather updates, sports game schedules, the Bitcoin price, or simply the current time, a stopwatch, or a countdown timer can be displayed. However, the app also offers a selection of GIFs reminiscent of old games like Street Fighter, single stars, or warning signs. Community content—always referred to as “space” in the app—can be called up so there’s plenty to choose from. The classic gaming snake can also be displayed in an endless loop on the screen.

Up to 20 can be selected from all content via saveable playlists, which are displayed one after the other, allowing an individual display period from one second to one hour for each graphic to be set.
The 32×32 pixel gaming pixel light is powered by 9 LEDs per square centimeter and produces around 180 cd/m² of light when displayed in white. If displayed only in red, it’s 77 cd/m², 211 cd/m² for green, and 48 cd/m² for blue.

Simple graphics work well
Simple graphics work well
If the image isn’t square, it’s simply cropped on the right and left. You don’t have the option to simply leave the top and bottom and provide a background color. Adapting the selected area outside the square pre-selection isn’t possible; only a smaller area can be defined. Therefore, it may be necessary to adjust an image outside the app so that the Govee Home app’s selection fits. The app can’t process SVG files, but JPG, GIF, and PNG files can be handled without any problems.
However, animations on a GIF can’t be loaded under graffiti, but for this, you must switch to “DIY” mode. In this mode, GIFs can be downloaded, saved, and shared. In both modes, you must make sure to set the background transparent beforehand if it’s going to be black. It’s not possible to select black as the color to use for drawing. All black surfaces must therefore be created using a transparent background, which is somewhat cumbersome.
If you prefer to work artistically, you can also draw your own images in the app and select the effects. Additionally, images imported from your smartphone can be supplemented with effects and graphics from the library so you can further customize them. The possibilities for where and what content can be brought to light by pixels are indeed varied and very well implemented.
Additionally, the pixel lighting effects can be synchronized with music or sounds, which it detects via a microphone. The type of effect, for example, is displayed in Meteorr, fog, or a spectrum when a sound is recognized, and can be selected in the app. The sensitivity can also be set for this option so that the display doesn’t react to every little sound.

Creating Images via AI
The special feature of Govee pixel lights is the connection to the AI chatbot to create its own AI-generated content (AIGC) for the display. “Lighting Bot” commands can be given via the app, which are then implemented graphically. Here too, there are no limits to your imagination, but you should keep in mind that 32 x 32 pixels offer very limited options. Not all content you offer is easy to represent on the screen and look good. Up to ten images can then be placed on the AI-prepared graphic to further individualize the image.
Creating your own images using AI works perfectly via the Govee app. As usual with generative AI, not all results will match your own ideas, but you can simply refine the command, refine, or modify the image until you achieve a result you like. However, in the app, when creating images, a relatively high-resolution image is initially displayed, which is then translated to only 32 x 32 pixels on the screen. This is not immediately apparent in the AI assistant.
Power Consumption
The power consumption of the pixel light is between 2.0 and 4.0 watts in the test, depending on the displayed content. The power supply is designed for a maximum of 12 watts. If you turn off the pixel light using the device’s button, this standby mode, in which the pixel light is always online and can also be turned on via the app, consumes 1.8 watts.
Light Control Functions
Smart control with Alexa, Google Home, and the Govee Home App is also available for the Pixel Playset. It can be synchronized and controlled with other lights and devices via the Govee app. The app not only allows the display to be configured, adjusting the brightness, music playback, and the content to be displayed, but it can also be easily turned on and off, or controlled using a schedule. “Wake-up” functions, which slowly brighten the display, and “sleep” functions, which dim the display over 15 minutes, are integrated.

Ultimately, the Govee Gaming Pixel Light is a gadget that combines light and display due to its functions. If you can get excited about it, you’ll have plenty of opportunities with it to bring a wide variety of pixel art design content to the small 32×32 pixels. What isn’t yet available in Govee or community content can also be easily drawn, uploaded, or created by the AI chat bot, which also performed well in testing.
You shouldn’t expect more than 8-bit music from the built-in speaker. The Govee Gaming Pixel Light isn’t intended for desktop music playback. Before purchasing a pixel light, you should consider how you actually intend to use it in the long term. The initial excitement of trying out various content and creating new graphics via the chat bot evaporates after a few days. Even though it’s not a huge investment at €99.99*, you shouldn’t let the display deteriorate like a better watch after a few days. Therefore, you are required to constantly provide variety on your desktop. The Govee Gaming Pixel Light is definitely capable of this with its many options.
Techastuce received the Govee Gaming Pixel Light for testing under NDA. The only requirement was the earliest possible release date. The manufacturer had no influence on the testing; there was no obligation to publish.
