Graphics card sales: Nvidia loses shares in AMD and Intel for the first time

There are new figures for global graphics card sales and the respective market shares of GPU manufacturers. If Nvidia had recently reached a huge 90% share, it somewhat declined in the fourth of 2024. AMD takes advantage of this and conquers 7 percentage points.

“Nvidia’s market share has never been higher than now” was the headline of the latest IT Core report on graphics card sales figures based on statistics from market research firm Jon Peddie Research (JPR). In the third quarter of 2024, Nvidia was able to increase the market share from 88% to 90% for the first time. Since Intel still has too low sales, the remaining 10% (rounded) AMD was allocated.

However, at the end of the year, NVIDIA could not further extend this dominance and, on the contrary, the shares lost global sales, the new figures for the fourth quarter of 2024. According to the JPR study, NVIDIA “only” 82% of global sales during this period, while AMD increased from 10 percent to 17 percent. Intel was also able to get something and is now listed with around 1% market share in the chart.

Global sales increased from 8.1 million to 8.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2024 and therefore by 4% compared to the third quarter. However, on the one hand this is a usual increase in the Christmas and on the other hand the view of recent years shows that this is still a very low level for the market which “still has not returned to normal”, as Jon Peddie, the head of JPR. According to him, “the tariffs will weaken the overall market.”

More desktop PCs, fewer graphics cards

In another chart, global desktop PC sales are compared to graphics card sales. Recently, more desktop PCs have been sold again (22.5 million), but the number of has not increased to the same extent.

This alone is not an indication that fewer and fewer desktop PCs are equipped with a dedicated graphics card, after all, graphics cards are also sold separately. However, JPR speaks of a drop in spread.

In the field of notebooks, the increasingly strong integrated GPUs from AMD and Intel have been competing with dedicated graphics chips in the entry-level class for a long time. The same applies to desktop systems away from gaming PCs.
