Green500 supercomputer: Europe shows the United States how efficient mainframes are

Alongside the global ranking, the Top500 supercomputers, sorted by computing power, the Green500 list, sorted by energy efficiency, has been updated. For once, the United States doesn’t dominate here, as 8 of the top 10 come from Europe and four of them from Germany. This also applies to the unchanged leader.

Energy efficiency apparently plays a more important role in Europe than in the United States, as only two American systems appear in the top 10 of the Green500 efficiency rankings. With 8th place for the 2-year-old Intel/Nvidia Henri system and 10th place for newcomer rzAdams with AMD chips, the US ranking is not particularly good.

German JEDI remains in the lead

At the top is the JEDI module of the future European exascale supercomputer JUPITER, which is being built at the Jülich Research Center and should be ready next year. With Nvidia’s efficient Grace Hopper combination, JEDI still achieves 72.73 GigaFLOPS per watt, which no new system can beat yet.

However, the new number two in the form of ROMEO-2025 comes close with 70.91 GFLOPS/W. Third place also goes to France with Adastra 2 and 69.10 GFLOPS/Watt. This shows that not only the Nvidia Grace Hopper superchip, but also AMD’s MI300A APU enables extremely efficient systems.

Two new arrivals from Germany

There are other newcomers in 5th and 6th place and both are from Germany. Capella achieves 68.05 GFLOPS/Watt with Epyc CPUs and H100 GPUs. JETI is another module of the upcoming JUPITER system, which at 83 PetaFLOPS offers much more computing power than the JEDI module, but is not as efficient at 67.96 GFLOPS/Watt.

With four systems now in the top 10 of the Green500 and still leading below, Germany can practically proclaim itself world efficiency champion.
