Numerous screenshots and a gameplay video have been posted to Reddit, purporting to show scenes from a developer build of Half-Life 2 RTX. Behind this is the upcoming remake of the classic, which uses new graphics technologies such as ray tracing to make the outdated first-person shooter shine in new splendor.

The origin of the images, which DSO Gaming talks about, among other things, can be found on Reddit. The Water CS2 YouTube channel has summarized the total of 28 screenshots and the video, which is approximately 6 minutes long, in the video embedded below. It is quite possible that the content will soon disappear again at the request of the creator, as often happens in such cases.

The scenes must come from a “Dev Build”, that is to say a preliminary version from the developers. As we know, modders organized under Orbifold Studios are working on the project, supported by Nvidia; after all, “RTX” stands for Nvidia’s ray tracing technology.

There’s not much to see officially yet

Half-Life 2 RTX was first announced at Gamescom 2023. A year later, there was at least one new trailer. On Half-Life 2’s 20th anniversary, the final signs of life have appeared in the form of developer voices and some ideas.

Meanwhile, more than 100 developers and artists are expected to be involved in the project.

No date announced yet

There is still no official release date, but Half-Life 2 RTX can already be added to the wishlist on Steam. It will be available as free DLC for owners of Half-Life 2 and, last but not least, will promote Nvidia’s graphics technologies.

Full ray tracing or path tracing and DLSS 3.5 as well as various new assets and models are planned. Graphically, we can expect a huge improvement over the appearance of the 2004 original. The new 4K textures would mean an increase in geometric details by a factor of 25. A corresponding thirst for hardware is therefore conceivable.
