Huawei has released the public beta 5.0.0.150 of its Harmonyos Next mobile operating system for last year’s flagship Mate 70 and Pura 70 models. The update to the operating system previously used in China brings some interesting innovations, but the gap between the well-known operating systems and iOS remains significant.
Harmonyos Next ≠ Harmonyos
Only a few manufacturers are likely to develop a completely new mobile operating system. Huawei has made a virtue of necessity in the situation caused by the US trade ban and the elimination of access to Android, including Google services, which should hardly be surprising given a domestic market with approximately 1.4 billion inhabitants and state support.
Huawei—at least in China—has also distanced itself from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and is therefore dispensing with Android libraries in Harmonyos, meaning that the corresponding apps can no longer be built natively. In Europe, the situation is different: here, Android and iOS dominate the market, and the majority of users expect full app support for their mobile devices. Therefore, Huawei remains in the European market with EMUI, which is based on AOSP and allows the use of Android apps. Some smartphones, such as the Pura 70, move between the two worlds—depending on the region in which they are offered.
Some standard features are now arriving.
With the new update, Huawei is also enabling its own system with other features that have long been known on Android and iOS. After a long time, several apps can now be selected on the home screen and then moved to the right corner of the screen for deletion. In addition, a new widget for the phone manager has been introduced, allowing memory, battery level, data consumption, and other system areas to be more conveniently managed.
The manufacturer has also expanded the screen version: the screen can now be shared via the Meettime app during a video call, allowing you to write on the screen or create sketches that are then visible to all participants. Activation memories can now be set in child protection mode.
Air Transfer now also supports Huawei Music if the app is up to date. This means that music files can be transferred wirelessly between devices with Harmonyos 5.0. In the internal browser, Huawei has also improved the web video assistant, which now allows volume and brightness adjustment when fully displayed using gestures on the edge of the screen.
