With the XMG8 (test), the manufacturer Schenker did not try to address typical laptop users 15 years ago, but aimed specifically at gamers. As a result, the laptop offered very powerful hardware, an 18.4-inch screen and came in at almost 5.6 kg.
Slip instead of spill
The XMG8 was a gigantic notebook with dimensions of 439 × 299 × 44 mm and a weight of 5.6 kg. In the base version, customers received a Duo Intel Core 2 P8700, while the test model relied on a DUO P9700 Core 2 with 2.8 GHz instead of 2.53 GHz. Alternatively, there were also quad-core processors for a higher premium.

In terms of main memory, users received at least two GB, so the test model was equipped with four GB. Common to all models was the integrated NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 280M, which had 1 GB of GBDDR3 memory. If that wasn’t enough, you could optionally upgrade an SLI array of two GeForce GTX 280ms.

Apart from that, the Schenker × RJ-11, 1 × Cat TV, 1 × IR port for remote control and a 7-in-1 card reader (MMC / RSMMC / MS / MS PRO / MS DUO / SD / MINI-SD). In addition, there was a webcam with 2.0 megapixels, a built-in Bluetooth recipient and wireless LAN according to the 802.11a / b / g standard. The 18.4-inch display offered a resolution of 1,920 × 1,080 pixels, but struggled in practice with strong reflections and bad flashing angles. According to the manufacturer, the 4,650 mAh battery should run the XMG8 for about 1 1/2 hours before the laptop goes to plug. In practice, of course, the duration depended on the components and use chosen.
Ordinary gaming performance
In the benchmarks, the Schenker The XMG8 thus delivered a good gaming performance for a mobile computer – even if this definition fell only to a limited extent with a weight of 5.6 kg. Contrary to the name GeForce GTX 280m, the performance was far from that of a GeForce GTX 280 without massux.
The XMG8 had to struggle in the B grades. The volume under load was very loud at 57 dB(A) and the temperature at 88°C was also on the limit. The desktop PC came with 56.5 dB(a) at a similar background noise, in both cases it was carried out for the sake of measuring fairness at a distance of 15 cm. In practice, users usually sit not so close to a desktop computer, but in front of a laptop.
Conclusion
The Schenker XMG8 was not really suitable for mobile use. With a battery life of 102 minutes, there weren’t many scenarios where users could walk away from an outlet. However, the laptop offered itself to anyone looking for a portable gaming system. High volume was opposed to high performance for a laptop. The XMG8 was a niche product, which fell into this niche, it could be interesting for it.
