Seagate’s “premium” brand, LaCie, has presented a new version of its robust SSD for outdoor use. Thanks to Thunderbolt 5, the LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 is the “fastest working drive for creative professionals,” announces the manufacturer. A whopping 6,700 MB/s can be achieved at its peak.
Even faster than OWC Envoy Ultra
The LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 is one of the first SSDs to feature Thunderbolt 5, and based on promised performance, it’s currently the fastest external SSD ever. The OWC Envoy Ultra reaches up to 6000 MB/s via the same interface and USB4 SSDs like the Adata SE940 or Corsair EX400U are already a class slower at 4000 MB/s. The bottom line is that all information concerns the maximum values briefly reached in the benchmark. The practice of permanent transfers is another matter.

LaCie promises at least 6,700 MB/s read and 5,300 MB/s write as the maximum possible. The aim is to speed up “work processes for creative projects”. This is primarily aimed at photographers and videographers who use cameras and drones to take high-resolution outdoor photos and want to transfer large amounts of data as quickly as possible. The storage capacity of the LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 is 2 TB or 4 TB.
Thanks to its protective rubber cover, it can withstand falls from a height of up to 3 meters without damage. It is also dust and waterproof to IP68 certification, but not when used on the computer via a USB-C cable. If it does not yet support Thunderbolt 5, there is backward compatibility with the Thunderbolt 4, USB4 or even slower USB standards.
Seagate offers a five-year warranty and is offering the SSD, which measures 98 × 65 × 17 mm and weighs 150 grams, at prices around 430 euros for 2 TB and 690 euros for 4 TB. Availability is expected later this month -this.
