Lenovo and Valve join forces at CES 2025 and introduce the “Legion Go S – Powered by SteamOS”, the first officially licensed gaming handheld with SteamOS. The device is still available with 11. The successor to the first Legion Go was initially announced as a prototype at the show.

With Windows in white, with SteamOS in black

As we already suspected, Lenovo will present three new gaming handhelds for the show. These include the Legion Go S with Windows 11 or SteamOS (8 inches) as well as a prototype of the upcoming 2nd generation Legion Go with 8.8 inches, the final version of which is expected to hit the market later this year.

The Legion Go S with Windows 11 or SteamOS is identical in terms of operating system and color (white with Windows, black with SteamOS) and is available with up to AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme, alternatively the AMD Ryzen Z2 is available – the chip is almost identical, as Techoutil already reported yesterday. The APUs are each combined with up to 32 GB LPDDR5X-6400 and up to 1 TB PCIe SSD, which can also be retrofitted in M.2-2242 or M.2-2280 format. The integrated battery has 55.5 Wh distributed over three cells.

At 299.0 x 127.6 x 22.6 mm and 740 g, the chassis is smaller and lighter than the 1st generation Legion Go. The reason for this is, on the one hand, the smaller screen and, on the other hand, Lenovo has dispensed with detachable Joy-Con type controllers for the cheaper model.

The screen measures 8.0 inches instead of the previously used 8.8 inches, but it also has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. According to Lenovo, the LCD panel covers 100% of the sRGB color space, shines at up to 500 nits, and can operate at a maximum frequency of 120 Hz.

From 629 euros with Windows 11

The market launch of the Legion Go S with Windows 11 is scheduled for next January at prices expected to start at 629 euros. For the Legion Go S with SteamOS you will have to wait until April, and prices have not yet been determined. Given the lack of a Windows license, this variant will probably cost as much as the other model at most.

The high-end successor will come later

For the successor to the Legion Go presented at IFA 2023, Lenovo is asking for a little more time and only announcing a prototype and a subsequent launch in Las Vegas. In the Legion Go (8.8″, 2), ergonomic optimizations such as rounded TrueStrike controllers with a round control pad aim to increase comfort and gaming pleasure.

The chassis with detachable controllers is proportionally larger than the Legion Go S. With controllers it is only 295.6mm wide, which is similar to the Legion Go S, but the price is reflected in the height (136. 7 mm) and depth (42.3 mm). and total weight (1,079 g). different design with modular controllers.

Ryzen Z2 Extreme with Zen 5 and RDNA 3.5

Under the hood, the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme prototype features a new with Zen 5 cores and RNDA 3.5 GPU. The 74 Wh battery should also be significantly more efficient than previously offered models. RAM up to 32 GB follows the faster LPDDR5X-7500 standard.

In this model, the image output is on an OLED screen instead of an LCD panel, but it has the same WUXGA resolution. According to the manufacturer, an OLED panel natively designed for landscape format is explicitly used, after the predecessor tilted a native portrait panel to landscape format, which led to problems with some . With a minimum of 30 Hz and a maximum of 144 Hz, the panel also supports wider VRR bandwidth. The OLED panel would reach a brightness of 500 nits and cover 97% of the DCI-P3 color space.

Pricing and availability for the 2nd Gen Legion Go have not yet been determined; the gaming handheld is expected to hit the market later this year.

Techtip received information about this item from Lenovo under NDA. The only requirement was the earliest possible publication date.
