Leica Lux Grip: Camerage for the iPhone adapts to the Leica Camera app

In line with the Leica-Lux app for iPhones presented last year, the company with the Leica Lux Grip now also a camera agency for Applesmartphones. The Leica Lux grip can be attached to the iPhone using a Magsafe and offers a two-stage shutter release and two configurable function keys.

In June 2024 for the release of Leica Luxon, a potential entry to Horizont has already been recognized by Leica in the smartphone market. Finally, Leica Lux had emerged from the takeover of the Norwegian company Fjorden in late 2023, which offers its own camera agent for the iPhone, including its own camera application, which will continue to be offered.

Leica Lux Grip costs 300 euros

Now Leica is moving into this market with the Leica Lux Grip and once again aimed at enthusiasts with a soft spot for Leica, who don’t just want to shoot on-screen buttons, but with real haptic controls. Considering the price segment, in which Leica products are usually represented, the price of 300 euros is not surprising for the Leica Lux grip. The manufacturer meets buyers with a one-year Pro license for the Leica-Lux app, which usually costs 79.99 euros. A brown leather bag is offered as accessories for 55 euros. The company gives a two-year warranty on the Leica Lux grip.

For all iPhones with Magsafe

The Leica Lux Grip is a camera agent for all iPhone models from the iPhone 12 that from Magsafe was first offered in smartphones. At the same time, Leica explains that the best results can be obtained from the iPhone 14 (test). The camera agent docks magnetically on the back of the smartphone and convinces with a significantly higher holding force than the Magsafe charger from Apple. A rotation allows the grip to be aligned horizontally or vertically on the iPhone, and two screws can also be loosened to make the grip accessible to left-handed users. An LED serves different status messages, and users find a 1/4-inch wire for tripods on the underside of the camera agent.

Leica manufactures the camera agent entirely from aluminum and is somewhat of its own SL system in design, as features such as the round, shutter button and function keys illustrate. However, Leica has not taken over the handle itself, to generate more grip, but other than that it should be the same black anodized aluminum of the expensive cameras. However, the Leica Lux handle is not “made in Germany”, for the production you work with a partner in Hong Kong.

Exclusively for the Leica Lux application

The new camera agency is designed exclusively for the use of your own Leica Lux app, which is offered in free and paid versions with an extended range of functions. The shutter release works in two stages, so you focus first and then take the photos. The two front function keys can be freely covered by the app, so that it is possible, for example, to change simulated Leica lenses. On the front, the camera agency also has a rotating wheel that can be used for navigation with a previously selected menu. The camera application is responsible for GRIP updates and indicates successful connection.

The battery is rated for 1,000 photos

On the technical side, the Leica Lux Grip adds an additional 130g of weight to the smartphone and takes up significantly more pocket space due to the round grip. The handle can be connected directly to the back of the smartphone or with a Magsafe cover. Leica installs a battery with 300 mAh designed for around 1,000 photos. The battery can be charged via USB-C in around two hours, and the MAGSAFE interface can use accessories but also with the smartphone battery. The smartphone is connected to Bluetooth 5.0 LE. Due to some restrictions on Apple However, if the Leica Lux app cannot be started via the Leica Lux handle, it must be done manually via the screen first.
