With good performance, high efficiency and relatively low prices, Lexar NM790 has become a popular SSD series. The series is now expanding upwards: the NM790 with a huge 8 TB of storage space will be available shortly.
In the summer of 2023, the high-end Chinese SSD Lexar NM790 hit the market at truly competitive prices. Tests have proven that this is not a cheap technology, but rather a competitive and efficient technology. Techconseil was able to confirm this during the test of the 4 TB model.

Now 8TB follows
In order to meet the growing demand for SSDs with high storage capacities, Lexar is now launching the NM790 with 8 TB. It is emphasized that strictly speaking, this is 8,192 GB, while other models do not only offer 8,000 GB.

Lexar cites a maximum sequential throughput of 7,000 MB/s read and 6,200 MB/s write for the 8TB model. This makes the new version slightly slower than the 1TB to 4TB models, which peak at 7,400 MB/s and 6,500 MB/s. IOPS are also slightly lower at 850,000 reads and 900,000 writes. The table at the end of the report provides an exact comparison of the models.
6,000 TB until loss of warranty
The Total Bytes Written (TBW), which represents the amount of data written beyond which the warranty expires prematurely, is twice as high for the 8 TB model as for the 4 TB version. This means 6,000 TB or the equivalent to 6 petabytes of write volume. Otherwise the warranty remains 5 years.
The form factor (M.2-2280) and interface (PCIe 4.0 x4) remain unchanged. Lexar generally talks about 3D TLC NAND and a current 12nm controller for the entire NM790 series. It is therefore to be expected that Maxiotek’s DRAM-free MAP1602 controller will also be combined with YMTC’s 232-layer TLC-NAND in the 8TB model. However, Maxiotek previously specified a maximum storage capacity of 4TB for the controller. But as everyone knows, controller data sheets can evolve over time.
Key data, pricing and availability
Lexar says the 8TB NM790 will be available later in October. A price has not yet been announced. The editorial team requested more details about the technology.
