LG Display is often at the forefront when it comes to showcasing the latest screen developments such as foldable, rollable or, more recently, extendable panels. LG Display presents the next stage of development of the “Stretchable Display”, which will be presented for the first time in 2022, with an enlargement of up to 50%.
With the prototype presented two years ago, expansion of up to 20 percent was possible without the screen being damaged by this type of deformation. The micro-LED panel can be stretched from 12 inches to 14 inches and deformed in the hand like a cloth. The “expandable screen” had a pixel density of 100 ppi and, according to LG, its shape could be changed more than 10,000 times.
Panel extends from 12 to 18 inches
The company has now presented the next stage of development with an expansion factor of up to 50 percent to industry representatives at the LG Science Park in Seoul. In its initial state, the panel, which still relies on micro-LEDs, measures 12 inches again, but if desired, it can now be stretched up to 18 inches and thus enlarged by up to 50 percent or otherwise deformed.
New substrate like contact lenses
LG Display indicates, among other things, the use of a special “silicon substrate” (“silicon”) for the further development of the panel, which is also used for contact lenses. So there may be a typo in the press release, as the contact lens comparison is based on silicone rather than silicon.
The company also mentions a new type of wiring for micro-LEDs, without going into details. In the first generation, there was talk of S-shaped wiring instead of a straight structure. The current prototype again uses 40 µm micro-LEDs and is said to be capable of deforming more than 10,000 times.
No mass production yet
However, a close to mass production product with extendable screen is not yet available. In 2020, LG Display was selected as a leading company for the development of an expandable display in a national project and aims to develop it to mass production in collaboration with 19 other Korean companies and research institutes. Expandable panels could one day be used in the fashion, clothing and automotive industries, LG Display says. For example, a convex-shaped panel was designed specifically for cars and an extendable screen with real-time information integrated into the uniform for firefighters.
