2K and Hangar 13 have released the first gameplay trailer for Mafia: The Old Country. It showcases car action, horseback action, and stealth, with distractions for the enemy and a subsequent secret knife murder. Players also get a good look at historical Sicily.
First Look at the Mechanics
2K’s Mafia: The Old Country has received a first gameplay trailer. The fourth installment of the Mafia series doesn’t take place in a big city at the beginning of the 20th century, but in Sicily, and is generally more rural than before. In the nearly two-minute trailer, players get their first glimpse of the gameplay mechanics. In the trailer, Enzo Favara, the main actor, can be seen following someone in a car. Not only do other road users hold on, but the dirt road also swirls around, and the car struggles with its grip from then on. New scenes show Enzo chasing a carriage, but this time Enzo isn’t sitting in a car, but also on the back of a horse.
But there’s also plenty of gunplay action typical of a Mafia game. Enzo then takes cover in a typical gunman-like manner behind tables and corners, or attacks head-on to put opponents to work with his bare arms. But attacks from behind, from the shadows, are also quietly and covertly presented. Even, as other games have shown, a coin talent is used as a distraction, so that the opponent looks in the wrong direction while Enzo plunges the knife into his throat. The game’s impressions aren’t particularly good; there’s a lot of blood after the use of violence, which the USK has recognized with an AB-18 seal. Mafia: The Old Country
Development Insights
Almost simultaneously with the gameplay trailer, the developers of Hangar 13 released a Developer Insights video to explain their perspective and the idea behind the game design of Mafia: The Old Country. Technically, the game is based on Unreal Engine 5. The game is said to be a classic mafia game with a linear story. The developers set the time in the early 1900s and immersed the player in an elegant Sicily, which promises, for example, mining work, historic buildings, and rural areas, which also exudes a certain “Wild Western” flair. The developers directly gathered impressions of Sicily. The knife is expected to play a major role in combat, and the player, it seems, must store its ammunition. Character behavior and facial expressions are particularly emphasized by the developers, a degree of immersion similar to that of a movie, a goal the developers are promising.
Release in summer
Mafia: The Old Country will be released on August 8, 2025, for PC on the Steam store and for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X. The game can be pre-ordered for around €50 for the standard edition and €60 for the deluxe edition.
