iXsystems has released TrueNAS Scale version 24.10, also called Electric Eel. With TrueNAS, a computer can be used as network or be equipped with a NAS that allows switching – such as or Ugreen.

TrueNAS Scale is the future

While TrueNAS Core is based on FreeBSD but no longer under development, TrueNAS Scale uses Debian as its base and includes an HCI that allows the use of virtual machines and running in containers. An upgrade from TrueNAS Core to TrueNAS Scale is possible with an ISO installation of TrueNAS 24.04, restoring configuration files, and later updating to TrueNAS 24.10.

In the final version, some errors from the second version candidate have also been corrected. More than 9,000 testers participated in the beta test, which began on October 4 with the first release candidate.

Now with Docker and RAID extension

One of the most important innovations in TrueNAS 24.10 is the move from Kubernetes as a container management and configuration solution to the much simpler Docker with Docker Compose. This eliminates a lot of complexity and risk of error and also allows you to install your own container applications. Additionally, with OpenZFS 2.3, RAID-Z expansion, i.e. adding a disk later, is supported for the first time under ZFS.

Some of the most significant changes and innovations are listed below:

The TrueNAS Apps feature backend is moving from Kubernetes to Docker to streamline application deployment and management (announcement). Custom application deployment of Docker images is available via a guided wizard or Compose YAML file. Extending a RAIDZ vdev with individual disks (OpenZFS feature sponsored by iXsystems). New TrueCloud backup jobs with simplified features for Storj iX cloud backups and recovery. New global search pages and search parameters in the TrueNAS user interface. Reworked dashboard with more widgets, data reporting and customization. User interface support for SMART testing. Align enclosure management with 13.3 and improve feature performance. Preserve SMB alternate data streams when ingesting data from remote servers. Rewrite the TrueNAS installer to better support future development efforts. Polish the UI table layout and integrate it with global search (NAS-127222). Replace nslcd with sssd to Improve support for Kerberos, NFS, and SMB in non-AD environments (NAS-127073). Generate a unique system ID for each installation. (NAS-123519).ZFS Fast Deduplication (OpenZFS feature sponsored by iXsystems): This feature is partially present in TrueNAS, but is considered experimental and disabled by default in 24.10. Full UI integration is planned in a future release of TrueNAS (NAS-127088).

The full changelog can be viewed directly on iXsystems.

TrueNAS 24.10 is available for download now. TrueNAS Scale is free.
