The great anticipation of the Nintendo Switch 2 is causing the company’s quarterly figures to decline. Over the past nine months, Nintendo’s sales and profits have fallen by more than 30 or 40 percent. Sales figures for the three switching offshoots exploded by more than 30% during this period.
After the eternal rumors, the Switch 2 has finally been official since mid-January. The full announcement including pricing and technical details is scheduled for April 2 in a Nintendo Direct, before Nintendo Switch 2 experience events also take place in multiple cities in April to try out the new gaming console.
It’s not just since the last quarter that the wait for the Switch 2 has provided Nintendo with declining quarterly figures. The Switch 1 (test), which was first launched on March 3, 2017 in its original version with the LC display, has thus reached the end of its life cycle after around eight years.
Sales and profits decline again
For the three-quarter period in the 2025 financial year, which ended on December 31, Nintendo gives sales of 956.2 billion yen (5.96 billion euros) and therefore 31.4% less than for the same period of the previous year. References from 598.6 to 432.9 billion yen (2.7 billion euros) and therefore 27.7% reduced in the last quarter.

The bottom line is that the company has a net profit of 237.2 billion yen (1.48 billion euros) – a drop of 41.9%. Here too, the opinion of previous quarterly reports shows that the third quarter alone decreased by only 6 percent from 136.7 to 128.5 billion yen (800.62 million euros). The traditionally strong third quarter includes the Christmas business.
37.9% fewer OLED switching sold
A preview of the hardware illustrates the descent of current Nintendo before the Switch 2 strengthens the company again. 9.54 million switches in FY25/Q1-Q3 are available for 30.6 percent fewer units than in FY24/Q1-Q3. The Switch OLED declined the most at 37.9%, followed by the Switch Lite with 20.5% fewer units and the original Switch with a 19.4% lower number.
At the same time, Nintendo lost 24.4% less software, from 163.95 million units, it returned to 123.98 million units. Highlights were Super Mario Party Jamboree, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and Nintendo Switch Sports. Digital purchases were generally down 29%, but Nintendo was able to increase their share of physical games by 2.9 percentage points.
